Katie Ruiz is a Xicana artist who resides in San Diego. She was raised in Southern California and Northern Arizona. Ruiz is a figure painter and sculptor best known for her blanket series in which she portrays couples standing or lying under colorful Mexican blankets. She has a strong connection with nature and often uses natural objects like rocks, shells, leaves and sticks in her weavings and sculptures. Ruiz is dedicating the piece to another artist who recently passed away, Yolanda López—one of the most important Chicana/o/x artists working in California over the past five decades. Born in 1942 and raised in San Diego’s Barrio Logan neighborhood, López was based for much of her career in the Bay Area, where she passed at the age of 79. She is best known for her iconic Virgen de Guadalupe series, a seminal oeuvre in Chicanx feminist art she produced during the 1970s, which became some of the most-widely circulated images of a Chicano artist of her generation. López was also an activist and educator celebrated for her role in the Chicano art movement. The San Diego-based chamber choir SACRA/PROFANA has accomplished remarkable things in just ten years, including numerous world and U.S. premieres and collaborations with leading regional arts organizations. This year marks their debut on the St. James Music Series. The night skies have fascinated poets, thinkers, painters, and musicians since the dawn of time. In this program SACRA/PROFANA will present some of the finest choral music with the theme of stars, nighttime, and celestial bodies, with an emphasis on recently composed music. The group will put their stamp on modern masters such as Morten Lauridsen, René Clausen, and Frank Ticheli, as well as rising stars of choral music such as Eriks Esenvalds and Sarah Rimkus. Conductor Juan Carlos Acosta says “We are absolutely thrilled to be making our debut on the St. James Music Series. The setting is ideal, and we think that the audiences will appreciate our approach to this stunning music.”

The Escondido Arts Partnership is pleased to announce the twelfth presentation of Wood: A Furniture Show XII, hosted by Brian Murphy of Murphy's Fine Woodworking. This exhibition will feature a gathering of some of the very best furniture makers in Southern California showing their work at the Escondido Municipal Gallery. Handcrafted furniture will be exhibited in a variety of wood mediums and techniques, including innovative contemporary, traditional and whimsical art furniture, as well as detailed veneering and marquetry works. This exhibition is presented in association with the San Diego Fine Woodworking Association. This two-month exhibition runs January 7 through February 25, 2022. The opening reception on Saturday, January 8 provides an opportunity for the public to meet the featured woodworking artists from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. Awards for outstanding workmanship will be announced at 6 p.m. The Escondido Municipal Gallery's hours | Tuesday 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. and Thursday to Saturday 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. Exhibitions are always free and open to the public.
