The Avett Brothers return to The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park, this time with Mike Patton! Three-time Grammy Award nominees The Avett Brothers made mainstream waves with their critically acclaimed 2009 major label debut, "I and Love and You." In 2012, "The Carpenter" hit #4 on the Billboard Top 200, followed by "Magpie and the Dandelion" in 2013, which debuted at #5 on the Billboard 200. In 2016, the band was inducted into the North Carolina Music Hall of Fame. The 2017 documentary, "May It Last: A Portrait of The Avett Brothers" (co-directed by Judd Apatow and Michael Bonfiglio), chronicles the process of writing 2016’s "True Sadness," which debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Top Albums, #1 on Rock Albums, #3 on the Billboard 200, and scored 2 Grammy nominations. The film received high praise upon its release theatrically and on HBO, and it is currently available on DVD/Blu-Ray/VOD. In 2019, the band released their tenth studio album, Closer Than Together, featuring the single “High Steppin'” which reached #1 on the Americana Radio Singles Chart. The band's latest album, "The Third Gleam," debuted at #1 on Billboard’s Americana/Folk Albums chart, #1 Rock Albums, and #1 Vinyl Albums, and the single “Victory" hit #1 on the Americana Radio Singles Chart. The Avett Brothers stayed connected to fans amidst the COVID-19 pandemic by playing two sold out drive-in shows at Charlotte Motor Speedway. "Swept Away," a musical inspired by and featuring the music of The Avett Brothers, premiered in January 2022 at Berkeley Repertory Theatre to rave reviews from audiences and critics and recently wrapped a limited pre-Broadway engagement at D.C.’s Arena Stage. The band closed out 2023 with their 20th annual hometown New Year's Eve celebration and toured across the country for much of the following year, including a stop at The Rady Shell in Fall 2024. Karl Zingheim, a lecturer at SDSU and Historian for the USS Midway Museum, will present on the crucial, and often overlooked, history of The San Diego Museum of Art and Balboa Park during World War I and World War II. His talk will detail how Balboa Park and the Museum supported the home front and war effort by serving as military facilities, temporary housing, training grounds, and centers for morale and cultural preservation. Independent bookstores around San Diego have teamed up to encourage readers to visit as many participating bookstores as possible in one weekend! You can visit one or all fifteen, but the more bookstores you visit, the more prizes you can earn. The San Diego Book Crawl is an opportunity for readers to explore the diversity of San Diego's indie bookstores, shop local, and most of all have fun while hopefully discovering a new favorite read along the way! As a recording and touring artist, James Taylor has touched people with his warm baritone voice and distinctive style of guitar-playing for more than 50 years, while setting a precedent to which countless young musicians have aspired. Over the course of his celebrated songwriting and performing career, he has sold more than 100 million albums, earning gold, platinum and multi-platinum awards since the release of his self-titled debut album in 1968. In 2015, he released "Before This World," the first-ever #1 album of his illustrious career. James has won multiple GRAMMY Awards, has been inducted into both the Rock and Roll and the prestigious Songwriters Halls of Fame and in February 2006, The National Academy of Recording Arts and Sciences selected him its MUSICARES Person of the Year. He was also awarded the distinguished Chevalier of the Order of Arts and Letters by the French government and the National Medal of Arts by President Barack Obama in 2012. In November of 2015, James was presented with the Presidential Medal of Freedom, the Nation's highest civilian honor and in December of 2016 he received the Kennedy Center Honors, which are presented annually to individuals who have enriched American culture by distinguished achievement in the performing arts. In early 2020 he released "Break Shot," a deeply personal and authentic audio-only memoir detailing his first 21 years.
