  • Sundays, April 27 & May 4, 2 p.m. - 5 p.m. Steam bending wood is an efficient and environmentally-friendly process that has been used for hundreds of years in the construction of chairs, boats, tools, and countless other wooden objects. In this workshop, students will learn the fundamental process of steam bending wood, from wood selection and preparation, to the actual bending and drying process. Through demonstrations and hands-on exercises, students will each make their own steam-bent flower vase to take home. Materials are included. Students are asked to wear/bring long-sleeved clothing and a pair of thermal or heavy gloves. These are the instructor’s favorite gloves. Ages 18 and up. No experience necessary.   • Make Tiny Ceramics! April 13, 2 p.m. - 4 p.m. -OR- April 26, 10 a.m. - 12 p.m. Join us in the land of miniatures. You will learn how and get to create tiny pottery on a mini pottery wheel. No previous pottery experience necessary! In this 2-hour class, you will learn to create 1-3 tiny pots and can add some color if you would like to. You will learn how to center the clay and open it up to form tiny pots, bowls, or plates. This class is a great way to learn the basics of a wheel on a small scale. It is less intimidating and is an accessible way to throw and center clay. Grab a friend or family member who’s been curious about ceramics and come join me in creating tiny pottery! This class includes clay, under glazing and firing of the clay. The clay cannot be taken home at the time of the class because it must be kiln fired. The turn around is 1-2 weeks for drying, glazing, and firing before you pick up your miniature creations. No experience necessary.   • Learn to needle felt! Saturday, April 12, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. Have you ever wished you’d stumble upon a tiny fairy house while walking in a deep forest? Join felting artist Sophie Ancel in this 3-hour workshop where you’ll learn to make your own little house using needle felting techniques. Students will use natural wool roving and batting, felt, beads and simple embroidery. The class requires the use of sharp felting needles and we will cover how to safely use felting needles. Guards will also be provided. Each student will have the option of creating a tiny home equipped with a door, window, and decorated with flowers and leaves. This little home can be used as a box as the roof can act as a lid! You will be given a tiny light for added fairy house magic. No experience necessary. Ages 12+ welcome. About the Speaker: Prior to coming to UC San Diego, Palermo was a professor in structural Engineering at the University of Canterbury, Christchurch, New Zealand, which he joined in 2009. He started his career as a Faculty in 2005 as Assistant Professor (tenured) at Politecnico di Milano, Department of Structural Engineering. Palermo has three patents, over 400 publications in international journals and conference proceedings. Palermo is a member of several associations and is a Fellow of the International Association of Bridge and Structural Engineering (IABSE), Engineering New Zealand, the New Zealand Society of Earthquake Engineering (NZSEE). He served as President of the Concrete NZ Learned Society in 2021-2022 and New Zealand Head Delegate of the fib (Federation International du Beton) 2015-2023. Palermo is a passionate teacher and received several awards at the University of Canterbury. In 2021 Palermo was awarded as the “Most Influential International Accelerated Bridge Construction Person of the Year Outside U.S.” in Academia at the 2021 Accelerated Bridge Construction Conference in Miami.
