Bruce Kiesling, conductor San Diego Symphony Orchestra One of the defining rom coms of the genre, "Sleepless in Seattle," is set to be performed live in concert this winter by the San Diego Symphony Orchestra at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park. The perfect treat before Christmas, the show will feature the film’s iconic soundtrack, including some of the most romantic songs of all time, brought to life by a live orchestra. Originally released by TriStar Pictures in 1993, the film will be presented on a huge HD screen, while its beloved soundtrack is performed live to film, allowing audiences to experience the movie’s unforgettable charm in a whole new, heart-stirring way. Directed by the queen of romantic comedies, Nora Ephron, "Sleepless in Seattle" follows the cross-country, serendipitous journey of two strangers whose lives and hearts intersect in unexpected ways. Sam Baldwin (Tom Hanks) is a recently widowed father whose heartfelt call to a late-night radio show captures the attention of Annie Reed (Meg Ryan), a journalist on the opposite side of the country who becomes unexpectedly drawn to him. As Sam tries to rebuild a life with his young son and Annie questions the direction of her own, a series of chance moments and near-misses pull them toward one another, culminating in a hopeful twist on classic romantic destiny. The film’s screenplay was by Nora Ephron and David S. Ward and Jeff Arch, and was produced by Gary Foster. Marc Shaiman served as the composer and producer for "Sleepless in Seattle," skillfully blending classic romantic standards such as Jimmy Durante’s "As Time Goes By" and Louis Armstrong’s "A Kiss to Build a Dream On" with his own original pieces. Inocente Carreño’s "Margariteña," a radiant “symphonic gloss” from the 1950s, celebrates the Venezuelan composer’s Caribbean homeland. Drawing on popular melodies, including his beloved song “Margarita es una lágrima,” the piece glows with the warmth and rhythm of island life. Next, pianist Aristo Sham performs Prokofiev’s electrifying Piano Concerto No. 2, written when the composer was just 21. Its explosive rhythms, haunting lyricism, and sheer virtuosity shocked early audiences but revealed a bold new musical language. Reconstructed from memory after the original score was destroyed, the concerto stands among Prokofiev’s most thrilling creations. The concert concludes with Sibelius’s Symphony No. 2, a defining work in the Finnish composer’s evolution from Romantic opulence to taut modern mastery. Built from fragments that gradually coalesce into sweeping melodies, it mirrors the growth of an idea – from uncertainty to radiant triumph. The score for "Home Alone 2: Lost in New York" is an integral part of the film’s charm and emotional resonance. The music combines whimsical, light-hearted themes with dramatic, adventurous undertones. Williams’ iconic score includes both the playful and suspenseful, action-driven pieces that perfectly complement Kevin’s clever escapades and interactions with the burglars. The music heightens the holiday magic of the film while emphasizing the warmth, humor and thrills of Kevin’s adventure in New York. When clever and mischievous Kevin McCallister (Macaulay Culkin) is separated from his family at the airport, he mistakenly gets on a plane headed for New York City — while the rest of the McCallisters fly to Florida. Now alone in the Big Apple with enough money to turn it into his own playground, Kevin cons his way into a room at the luxurious Plaza Hotel and begins his usual antics. But Kevin won’t be alone for long. The notorious Wet Bandits (Joe Pesci, Daniel Stern), released from jail and still smarting from their last encounter with Kevin, are bound for New York too for a huge holiday heist.
