Five local homeowners are suing the city of San Diego and six city council members over the city's proposed trash collection fee, which they allege is unlawful because the fee exceeds the costs of providing trash services.

Hawthorne Country Store hosts its annual spring Chick Day on Saturday, March 8 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. in Escondido, Fallbrook, and Santee. This complimentary annual celebration will host more than 100 varieties of baby poultry; the event is a great way to learn about raising a home flock of backyard chickens. Hundreds of families typically attend each year. “More and more families are finding that chickens are pets that come with great benefits, such as producing protein, creating fertilizer, and recycling waste,” says Heather Thelen, owner of Hawthorne Country Store. “We are excited to once again bring this popular event to our communities [Escondido, Fallbrook and Santee] and share all our chicken knowledge.” There will also be a Peep Show on Friday, March 7, from 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. at all three locations. The $55 charge covers two adults, 21 and over. There will be hors d’oeuvres and beverages. This will give customers the first pick of rare, exotic, and the best egg-laying breeds. North Coast Rep presents "Some Dark Valley: The Testimony of Reverend Brand" written and performed by Robert Bailey. One moonlit night, Reverend Brand, a fiery 19th century circuit preacher, emerges from the shadowy mountains of Appalachia, and our collective history, to weave a tale of religious fervor set against a landscape scarred by war, poverty and disease – a story that also shines a light on rare moments of tender and resilient redemption. Robert Bailey’s solo performance grapples with the inevitable clash between an unyielding vision of moral rectitude and the tragic personal destruction it leaves in its wake. Embodying multiple characters while also singing gorgeous traditional songs handed down through generations of Southerners, Bailey transports the audience to a land and era that is haunting and illuminating in its relevance to today.
