We will explore the fundamentals of watercolor—adding pen-and-ink as well. The class is designed to break down fear and encourage spontaneity. All levels are welcome in this positive and encouraging class. Materials: Paper: two 22” x 30” sheets of 100%, 140 lb., rag, cold-pressed paper (such as Arches or Fabriano). Brushes: one #8, #10, or #12 round brush (with a good point); one 3/4” or 1” flat brush; one large (2” or 2 1/2”) cheap bristle brush (from hardware store). Other: palette (any palette with eight or more color wells will do); water container; sketchbook; two No. 2 pencils; 3/4” or 1”–wide masking tape; small drawing board (Gatorfoam board or Masonite, 12” x 16” minimum); paper towels (Viva preferred). Paint: Any colors you have. Must-have colors (at least 14 ml) are Daniel Smith New Gamboge; Winsor & Newton Burnt Sienna (do not substitute another brand for this one); Alizarin Crimson Permanent; French Ultramarine Blue; Phthalo Blue; Burnt Umber. From one of the first woman photographers, Anna Atkins, to lifestyle icon, DIY celebrity Martha Stewart—the Cyanotype Photographic Process continues to fascinate us with its beautiful tones of Prussian Blue colors, by the contact printing of objects (photograms), to using today’s digital negatives. This light sensitive process, activated by the ultraviolet rays of the sun and discovered by Sir John Herschel in 1842, has experienced several revivals since the 19th century. First in the 20th century with its rediscovery as an alternative process within university curricula worldwide to this last turn of century, in the 2000s, creating a revolt by fine art photographers in response to the onslaught of technology and its pesky pixel. In this two-day intensive workshop, we will push the process further by cyanotype printing on fabric, including the latest technique of exposing wet cyanotypes. We will be introduced to the basic procedures using commercially coated fabrics, then move quickly to hand-applied emulsions on various fabrics from cotton to silk. By embedding the photographic image within the “ply-ability” of fabric, we can explore finishing strategies for the image, from sewing, embroidering, quilting, and garment making to creating sculptural forms with the photograph on fabric. Materials: Materials provided with a $40 fee paid to instructor on the first day of class include chemistry and a contact printing frame. Join us for a fun still-life oil painting workshop inspired by a colorful summer tea party. All aspects of still-life painting will be covered in this two-day workshop: perspective, composition, color, and accuracy will be taught using a tabletop arrangement of cups, saucers, teapots, and flowers. Bright colors and a square format will encourage experimentation. Grab a coffee; we will begin each morning with a PowerPoint lesson followed by a demo on the painting process and technique. Afterward students will paint independently for the remainder of the morning. As the paintings progress, students will learn through discussion of creative issues and group critique. Pat welcomes students of all levels. Materials: A $5 fee will be paid to Pat on the first day of class.
