Create beautiful handmade jewelry! Choose from two upcoming dates: March 30, 2-4:30 p.m. -or- May 25, 2-4:30 p.m. Join Suzanne Balestri to learn the basics of Fused Glass and create your own glass jewelry to keep for yourself or give as a gift. This fun workshop offers a perfect introduction to Kiln-Formed (fused) glass for beginners, and allows those who have worked with glass before to hone their abilities and finesse their skills. You will learn how fused glass differs from other forms of art glass, how to use the various tools involved in creating glass art, and how to cut and grind the glass you will be using in your wearable art project. Using a colorful array of glass and pre-fired adornments, you’ll construct abstract or representational designs to be fashioned into earrings, pendants, rings, cuff links, even belt buckles! Each student will have plenty of space in the kiln for several items! Your pieces will be fired in a glass kiln to completely fuse each design into one solid piece, and will be ready for you to pick up the following week. Workshop fee includes pre-workshop instructional videos, all glass, equipment, and kiln firing of several pieces. This workshop is recommended for All Skill Levels – Ages 13 and up. Children 8+ years welcome with adult. Ribbon Cutting Ceremony February 27 at 9 a.m., Oceanside Campus, Chemistry/Biotechnology Building (OC13) RSVP for this state-of-the-art facility features cutting-edge chemistry and biotechnology labs along with two flexible 40-seat classrooms to support student learning. As our Biotechnology program expands, this building will provide much-needed space for growth and serve as a key part of the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) quad and plaza.

Learn to make a basket made from long leaf pine needles, using waxed Irish linen, an assortment of beads or other embellishments, starting with a stone center. Topics to be covered include the differences between pine needle types, preparing the needles, waxed Irish linen, basket centers, embellishing your basket, and how to start and how to finish your basket. Students have the option to weave a basket, a pendant, or an ornament. Basket Weaving is a wonderful way to recycle from nature and is also a meditative activity. No experience necessary. Thursdays, March 13, 20, 27, April 3, 10, 17, 24, from 4 p.m. - 7 p.m. Stained glass is unusual among the arts because of its direct relationship with light. When light passes through colored glass, different values, textures, and densities combine to form an extraordinary palette. Explore this magic by creating your own unique leaded stained-glass panel. In this 7-week course, you will learn from stained glass professional Lisa Maywood as you complete one or more 2-dimensional panels that will transform any room or space. The enrollment fee covers the cost of basic drawing materials, lead, solder, cement, and the use of the tools and machinery. Glass will be procured by each student on their own outside of class. Vintage Glassworks Studio (was Blue Dolphin Glass) is a great local source in San Diego. If you prefer your own supplies, please bring your own colored pencils and paper that is larger than 12″x12″ to the first class as you plan your project(s). It is also recommended that you bring your own safety gear (eye protection, dust mask, gloves). We have eye protection available if you do not have your own. There is no prerequisite for this class. Make a Turkey Wing Hand Broom! March 9, from 1-4 p.m. A Turkey Wing hand broom is an epic example of Appalachian folk art. It could be considered a functional tool or a decorated art piece. These brooms are made with natural broomcorn. Instructor AB will teach you the traditional techniques for binding and shaping the broomcorn, which is made from sorghum, to create a fun and unique experience…others call it a spiritual occurrence. Let’s sweep it up. Ages 13+ years and up is recommended.
