In this six week class students ages 13-17 will begin by learning the basics, focusing on 3 essential steps of the throwing process: centering, opening, and pulling. Students will be led in working with ceramics, hand-building and wheel throwing, learning slab construction, pinch pots, surface texture, clay impression and more. Peter Bolland is professor of philosophy and humanities at Southwestern College. He is the author of The Seven Stone Path: An Everyday Journey to Wisdom. In this talk, he will discuss the search for wisdom as humanity’s oldest quest. What is wisdom? And how is it different from knowledge? Is wisdom a body of information, or a way of being in the world? Is it universal or culturally specific? Why do so many wisdom traditions agree that wisdom is ineffable, that is, exists beyond language and concepts? Philosophy, the academic discipline generally tasked with this inquiry, is rife with conflicting perspectives on these most pressing questions. Outside The Lens (OTL) is calling all young photographers, artists, and filmmakers to participate in Voice Out: A Youth Media Arts Exhibition, OTL’s annual juried art show celebrating youth narratives and their power to transform communities. OTL welcomes submissions from emerging artists ages 8-19 in the categories of photography, mixed media and short video/animation (under 30 seconds) that explore this year’s theme of “Change.” Applicants should submit a brief artist statement and digital file of their artwork between February 17 and March 16 deadline by visiting the “Voice Out” webpage. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a survival skills aficionado, or simply curious about ancient craftsmanship, this class offers a unique opportunity to connect with a time-honored tradition.
