Verbatim Books and the North Park Community Fair are taking over North Park Way for a full day dedicated to the businesses that make this neighborhood the vibrant community that it is. Shop North Park is a fun and interactive street showcase that will bring together local retailers, service businesses, and creatives all into one place. This event will also have a neighborhood job fair component, featuring local businesses that are currently hiring. Are You a North Park Business? Applications are open now for local businesses interested in participating in Shop North Park. Priority will be given to brick-and-mortar businesses located within North Park, with spots open to surrounding community businesses as availability allows.   • 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. North Park Way (29th St. to Ray St.) Free Admission | All Ages | Dog Friendly Verbatim Books and the North Park Community Fair are taking over North Park Way for a full day of creating and getting your hands a little messy. Crafted by Hand is a hands-on community craft event where every booth, ran by local creatives and teachers, is an opportunity to sit down, make something, and take it home with you. This is not a market. Instead, you can move through the street at your own pace as you pick the activities that speak to you, paying as you go. No experience with a certain craft? No worries! There will be booths for different skill levels and ages. We will also have a craft supply swap booth on site and free community activities rotating throughout the day.   • Saturday, September 12 at 7:30 p.m. Reading | Community | Dance Party "Every night I pray to love, please invent yourself." - Jennifer Espinoza, from "It's Important to Be Something” Join us at Verbatim Books for Desire, Calling No. 2—a night of words, want, and wild joy. We’re bringing four writers who know how to make language do something to you. 2026 Lambda Literary Award Winners Demree McGhee, author of "Sympathy for Wild Girls," and Ilana Masad, author of "Beings" and "All My Mother’s Lovers" will read prose. Jennifer Espinoza, author of "I Don't Want to Be Understood," and emerging writer Jenna Flenner will share exquisite poetry. We’re excited to be raising money for a local queer nonprofit and crown the evening with a dance party! Stay tuned for more announcements as the evening gets closer. All ages. Free. Everyone is welcome. Let's celebrate books, desire, and community! The Writers: Demree McGhee is a writer. She earned her BA from the University of California San Diego and her MFA at San Diego State University. Her work has been published in Lunch Ticket, Wax Nine Journal, Burn All Books, and more. Her debut short story collection, "Sympathy for Wild Girls," is available from Feminist Press. Jennifer Espinoza is a trans woman poet. Her work has been featured in Poetry Magazine, The Paris Review, the American Poetry Review, The Rumpus, and elsewhere. She holds an MFA in poetry from UC Riverside and is currently a professor of creative writing. Ilana Masad is a writer of fiction, nonfiction, and criticism. Her work has appeared in The New Yorker, New York Times, LA Times, Washington Post, NPR, The Atlantic, and many more. She is the author of the novels "All My Mother's Lovers" and "Beings" and is co-editor of the anthology "Here for All the Reasons: Why We Watch The Bachelor." Masad holds a PhD in English from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln, has taught a wide variety of creative writing and literature courses, and also provides editorial services to authors. Jenna Flenner is a senior writing major at Point Loma Nazarene University. She actively contributes to the Driftwood creative arts journal and participates in local theatre. Born and raised in Camp Hill, Pennsylvania, she takes inspiration from early American history, combining it with her love of the Beat Generation. North Park residents and San Diego locals will be out to sell their gently worn clothing, stacks of books and records, vintage finds, home goods, collectibles, oddities, and those "why am I letting this go?" pieces that deserve a second life. Come stroll the block, connect with the local community, and find something you didn't know you were looking for! Interested in becoming a vendor? Market spaces are prioritized for North Park residents, with spots open to neighbors from the surrounding community as availability allows. All sellers must be willing to provide proof of residency if accepted. IDs will be checked upon arrival. This is not a vendor market. We are not looking for sellers, makers, or businesses; we're looking for neighbors with a pile of things that deserve a new home.
