Learn to create your own authentic Austrian Strudel! Sunday, March 2, from 2-5 p.m. In this hands-on baking class, you learn how to make authentic Austrian Apple Strudel. You will have a ready-to-bake Strudel for you to bring home to enjoy. During our class, you stretch the dough paper thin across a table until it’s covered in a blanket of dough! We make a simple but delicious apple filling for your Strudel, it’s surprising how little sugar we need for this dessert. You’ll love the final part: rolling up the Strudel with the help of a tablecloth! Students will need to bring a baking sheet of their own to transport their strudel home for baking. We will have freshly baked Strudel to savor with coffee while your instructor shares lots of tips and ideas for more fillings. The Academy of Our Lady of Peace (OLP) will host the Eleventh Annual Women’s Symposium on Friday, March 21. Modeled after the speaker panels at leading universities, OLP’s Women’s Symposium brings together top women leaders to share their insight and pathways to success with students, the Southern California region and beyond. The Women’s Symposium will feature a series of workshops and highly curated panels with prominent leaders in their industries. Beginning over 10 years ago as a reimagining of Career Day for students, the Women’s Symposium has blossomed into a professional half-day conference open to all community members in and around the San Diego/Baja corridor, from students to seasoned business professionals. Hosted annually during Women’s History Month, OLP’s Women’s Symposium celebrates the success of powerful women and their allies. The event will leave attendees with tangible advice, pathways forward, and the inspiration of empowerment and shared connection. Through dialogue and modeling, these female leaders empower young women to stand up and confidently pursue their dreams. This year’s Keynote Panel will feature women in the craft food and beverage industry, hosted by Maya Madsen, Founder and CEO of Maya’s Cookies. Her company is America’s #1 Black-Owned Gourmet Vegan Cookie Company. The honorary chair is Dr. Irma Peñuñuri, CEO and Founder of BurgerRock Media PR Agency and OLP Alumna, Class of 2004. Build your confidence & skills in the woodshop! Upcoming dates: Sundays, March 2, 9 a.m. - 12 p.m. or April 13, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. Join us in the woodshop for this 3-hour skill-building workshop! This is a unique class on skills and safety for the home shop. No specific project will be built, but students will learn safe practices on tools that you’d normally find in a home woodshop. Specific tools covered will be jigsaw, router and circular saw. Bring your questions to class. We’re happy to answer questions as we work. If time allows, we can show other tools in the woodshop as well. Materials are provided. We recommend students bring their own eye protection, ear protection & apron. Aprons for sale here. No experience necessary. Ages 18+ welcome. ABOUT WOODWORKING FOR WOMEN The Woodworking for Women class series is designed to empower women & nonbinary individuals in a supportive and educational woodshop environment which is predominantly a male-dominated space. In this series, most workshops and classes are project-based. The series covers the properties of wood, machine safety, and techniques on various tools and machines. Most classes also introduce various machines, sanding, glue-up methods, and finish techniques for finishing your project. This Saturday, March 1, 9 a.m. - 4 p.m. Learn foldforming and the art of patinas with award-winning metal artist and blacksmith, Pat Downing. In this all-day class, students will learn about safety, tools, and the basic methods of both foldforming and patinas. The class will consist of 3 hours of forming techniques and 3 hours focusing on patinas, with a one-hour lunch break. This is a hands-on techniques class designed to show how one can achieve folds and then apply patinas to finished pieces. In this class, students will work in copper, but the methods taught can be used in almost any metal and size, from jewelry to public art. What to bring: BYF (bring your favorite) hammer & safety glasses, if you have them. If not, you can borrow from ours. Students are welcome to bring a lunch to eat at the studio or nearby, or may purchase lunch nearby (there are many options in Liberty Station). Materials fee of $10 (cash only) to be paid to the instructor at the start of the class and includes copper and patinas. This class is appropriate for ages 18 years and older. No prior experience necessary.
