In this six week class students ages 13-17 will begin by learning the basics, focusing on 3 essential steps of the throwing process: centering, opening, and pulling. Students will be led in working with ceramics, hand-building and wheel throwing, learning slab construction, pinch pots, surface texture, clay impression and more. Peter Bolland is professor of philosophy and humanities at Southwestern College. He is the author of The Seven Stone Path: An Everyday Journey to Wisdom. In this talk, he will discuss the search for wisdom as humanity’s oldest quest. What is wisdom? And how is it different from knowledge? Is wisdom a body of information, or a way of being in the world? Is it universal or culturally specific? Why do so many wisdom traditions agree that wisdom is ineffable, that is, exists beyond language and concepts? Philosophy, the academic discipline generally tasked with this inquiry, is rife with conflicting perspectives on these most pressing questions. Outside The Lens (OTL) is calling all young photographers, artists, and filmmakers to participate in Voice Out: A Youth Media Arts Exhibition, OTL’s annual juried art show celebrating youth narratives and their power to transform communities. OTL welcomes submissions from emerging artists ages 8-19 in the categories of photography, mixed media and short video/animation (under 30 seconds) that explore this year’s theme of “Change.” Applicants should submit a brief artist statement and digital file of their artwork between February 17 and March 16 deadline by visiting the “Voice Out” webpage. Flintknapping is the ancient technique of shaping stone into tools through the application of controlled force, a skill that has been used by humans for hundreds of thousands of years. In this class, you’ll learn the basics of flintknapping, including how to create cutting tools, points, and other useful implements by striking and shaping raw stone. Guided by an experienced instructor, you’ll gain insight into the historical and cultural significance of flint tools and understand the precision involved in the process. Whether you’re a history enthusiast, a survival skills aficionado, or simply curious about ancient craftsmanship, this class offers a unique opportunity to connect with a time-honored tradition. You’ll leave with not only new skills but also a deeper appreciation for how early humans created the tools that helped shape civilization. With a main focus on functional pottery, beginner students will learn how to use the equipment in the studio and how to use the wheel while more advanced students will further use the wheel as a tool to create work made partially or entirely from thrown forms. All students will be encouraged to experiment with surface and altering techniques to transform their work from pots to functional works of art. Students will leave the class with finished work they can use at home that’s dishwasher safe! All students receive one month of FREE MEMBERSHIP at the ICA ceramics studio following the conclusion of the course. Formidable improviser and titular organist of the famous Dom Bedos organ at St Croix in Bordeaux, Paul Goussot will present a recital of music for organ by J.S. Bach and G.F Handel including several improvisations. This concert is part of the Ricercar Consort residency. A versatile musician, Paul Goussot has always tried to diversify his job as an artist by specializing at once in the organ, the harpsichord, and improvisation. He teaches continuo and improvisation at the Haute Ecole de Musique of Geneva in Switzerland and teaches the organ at the Rueil-Malmaison Conservatory. Prize winner of the international competitions of Bruges and St-Maurice d’Agaune, Paul Goussot successively won first prize for improvisation at the international competition in Luxembourg, first prize for improvisation at the 26th international organ competition in St-Albans and, in 2012, first prize and the prize of the public at the 49th international improvisation competition in Haarlem. He has been invited to prestigious European festivals: Musique sacrée à Notre-Dame de Paris, Festival de la Roque d’Anthéron, Bach Orgel festival Leipzig, Musik-fest Bremen, St-Albans organ festival, Ancona, Haarlem, Lausanne. He played many concerts with Philippe Pierlot and the Ricercar Consort, which resulted in recordings for the Label Mirare. His last CD recorded for the Label ROB on the Dom Bedos organ in Ste-Croix of Bordeaux received the Choc Classica award.
