Growing up around Washington, D.C., Edward Wong didn’t know about his father’s past in the People’s Liberation Army. As an adult, he probed those secrets over decades, including during his nine years as a New York Times correspondent and bureau chief in China, when he reported widely across the country, including in the frontier regions where his father had served. He talks about researching his father’s role in the air force and the army of the 1950s, the initial military occupation of Xinjiang, and the reconstitution of the Qing Empire under Communist rule from Mao to Xi. Star of India, the world's oldest active sailing ship and a popular visitor attraction in San Diego and centerpiece vessel of the fleet at the Maritime Museum of San Diego, has a fascinating history of ghosts and paranormal activity. This October, visitors looking for unusual spooky experiences, are invited to wander Star’s decks and discover the haunted tales tied to her rich maritime history. The experience is included with general admission. With souls lost and sightings documented, the Maritime Museum of San Diego has embraced the Halloween spirit for the month of October and prominently displayed an assortment of haunted Star tales aboard her main and below deck galleries. Accounts include reported strange occurrences believed to be tied to crew members of the past aboard the world’s oldest active sailing ship and iconic waterfront landmark.
