Saturday, October 26, 10 a.m. – 12 p.m. Beautiful and functional, this Macrame Shelf Wall Hanging is a great way to add texture to your space and also display your favorite nick-nacks! This beginner-friendly workshop will teach you several different macrame knots and also help develop your knotting skills. Finished shelf and hanging dimensions are approximately 12 inches wide by 36 inches in length. Choose from a basic Pine wood shelf, or upgrade to a darker-hued Walnut wood. Saturday, October 19, from 2 p.m. - 4:30 p.m. The seasons are changing, and it's a beautiful time of year to celebrate by creating whimsical fused glass art for your garden or windows! Your bright and cheerful sun catchers and garden sticks will make your garden, indoor potted plants, or windows sparkle! Instructor Suzanne Balestri will guide you in glass cutting techniques an design considerations to create your own artful creations to compliment your garden or to display in a sunny window. You will also receive two instructional videos a few days before the workshop so you'll have a head start on what to expect. Students can make up to 3 pieces measuring approximately 1.5” x 11” each. All glass art will be kiln-fired after class and ready for pick up at the Craft Collective approximately one week after class. All materials are included, including 2 pre-class video instructions, and materials and firing for 3 glass pieces. Additional pieces can be made in class for $5 each (payable with cash in class). The Friends of the Malcolm X Library present our Annual Fundraiser, Gift Day. The Friends support the library, in part by having book sales and hosting events. This event is free and will be from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Our event will feature amazing local talent including a live band and DJ, a choir, a story teller, line dancers and face painting for the kids. Local vendors will be selling a variety of great merchandise. The Friends of the Malcolm X Library will be selling hot dogs, nachos, beverages and books. Will Stucky and Lauren Leigh, who are accomplished and award-winning songwriters in their own right, teamed up to write and release their first song, Feel This Way, in December 2023. They have since been writing and harmonizing new songs about the nuanced ups and downs of life in a cheeky indie-folk fashion. They have made a splash in the local indie music scene since releasing their debut duo single last year. Opening the concert will be Aaron Bowen, an acoustic jazz/folk artist with a European flair—Django Reinhardt meets Paul Simon. A Southern California native and the son of four generations of musicians, Aaron has been a student of music and, in particular, a student of the guitar, from an early age. Touring extensively in Europe has gained Aaron a record contract with a Parisian label Seventh Crow Records. October 13, 20, 27, November 3 & 17, from 10 a.m. - 12:30 p.m. Sit with Ariana, a full-time potter and experienced teacher who specializes in connecting beginners to this new craft in a manageable and peaceful way. Students wanting to refresh their skills are also welcome. This class will focus on techniques that are straightforward and effective, with the goal of getting students able to confidently create work of their own upon leaving the classroom. Students will learn the fundamentals of wheel throwing with basic techniques and forms, including throwing each basic shape in this class–a basic cup, bowl, plate and a vase. Projects will be ready to pick up 1-2 weeks after the last class. Beginners welcome. Join Space 4 Art at the Sherman Heights Community Center on Tuesday, September 10 from 6-8 p.m. to experience a moving art exhibit featuring quilts created by January’s flood-impacted families. This community event showcases a collaborative quilt made during a healing-arts workshop led by teaching artist Yvette Roman in late August, when families used creativity to express their experiences and emotions connected to the floods. After the exhibit, families will take home the quilt pieces they contributed, serving as a lasting reminder of their collective strength.
