From the organizers: The sixth Latinx New Play Festival will take place at La Jolla Playhouse, October 27 – 29, 2023. The Latinx New Play Festival expands the presence of Latinx stories and artists on the American stage, and spotlights the broad range of today’s Latinx experience. Four scripts have been selected to be rehearsed and developed at the Playhouse, culminating in a live public reading at the festival. The festival will be free for everyone to attend, and includes a schedule of in-person readings of new works, panel discussions and other events. Produced by Dr. Maria Patrice Amon, the Playhouse’s 2023/2024 Artist-in-Residence, in partnership with La Jolla Playhouse, the Latinx New Play Festival was originally launched in 2016 by San Diego Repertory Theatre. We will pay special attention to your structure, character arc and scene writing. We will also cover How to Write a Book Proposal in the last session of the class. Since the former sessions work on learning individual skill sets (think one melody at a time), this class is vital to assist the writer in learning how to use all of the skill sets at once for a first draft (think symphony). Class structure: Except for the first class, the first hour will be lecture and the second hour will be read and critique where participants can workshop their material or class assignments. The Palomar Orchid Society is holding an orchid sale on Saturday, September 7 in the Gowland Meeting Room at the Carlsbad Library on Dove Lane.
