Learn to Weave with Silk! November 16, 1-5 p.m. No experience necessary. Ages 14+ welcome! In instructor Jeanine Ertl’s class, students will weave together in a space of colorful creativity and openness. She will provide instruction on weaving, a warped lap loom and a rainbow of recycled sari silk ribbon and yarn fibers to ignite your imagination. And we’ll weave together, learning and playing with the basics of the process from start to finish, each creating a unique handwoven that can be hung or draped, according to your desires. Please feel free to bring any items you may want to incorporate into your weaving, like interesting fibers, foraged and gathered natural objects, shells with holes, beads, etc. you may want to incorporate into your weaving. Each Weaver will complete a one-of-a-kind Handwoven Wall Hanging. In addition, if you find that you’re in love with the practice, you will have an option to purchase the loom you are working with, as well as additional fiber and tools to continue at home. November 16, from 9-11:30 a.m. In this workshop, students will learn about the origins of Kintsugi, the Japanese ‘art of golden repair,’ and its meaning as it relates to one’s own life. Instructor Luis Santiago explains, “In these uncertain and crazy times, I believe people can find some solace and comfort in realizing that their so called 'scars' and imperfections are things that do not need to be hidden or ashamed of.” While the traditional craft of Kintsugi can take multiple months to complete, mastery in application, and involves toxic lacquer, the techniques used in this workshop to repair two ceramic pieces and embellish these pieces in two distinct Kintsugi-inspired ways brings it to a much wider audience and allows for completion in one workshop. All materials are included. Students will learn two distinct ways of highlighting the breaks of their provided ceramic pieces and will take home a unique piece. Learn to Carve a Decorative Spoon! November 16 & 17, 9-11:30 a.m. In this 5-hour workshop, students will learn to carve a decorative spoon in basswood in the European carving tradition. Students will learn and apply the following skills that are needed to carve a simple decorative spoon: Carving safety; Honing/sharpening; Tracing and transfer of the spoon layout to a piece of basswood; Hollowing out the spoon; carving the back; and removing thickness under the handle; Carving out the handle; Sanding the spoon and handle; Finish can be applied at home (instructor can offer shellac, which is non-toxic). This class is designed for the beginner as well as more experienced carvers. Different techniques and styles make it interesting for all skill levels. There is no prerequisite for this class. All of the necessary tools and materials will be available to students for this class. It is recommended that you bring your own safety gear (eye protection, hearing protection, dust mask, gloves). We have hearing and eye protection available if you do not have your own. No experience necessary. Learn to wet felt soap & create fun gifts! November 30, 10 a.m. - Noon Join this 2-hour workshop and learn the ancient art of wet felting — the process of transforming loose wool into felted fabric. This fiber art technique has been used in the making of rugs, homes (yurts) and clothing for centuries. And in this class, each student will make 2 felted soaps, with an option to create more in class for an additional materials fee. What are felted soaps? A felted soap is the union of felted wool covering a bar of soap, creating a gentle exfoliating soap that’s anti-microbial and long lasting. The wool wrapped around the soap becomes a seamless piece of felt and can be embellished with interesting patterns and colors. In this class, felting artist Sylviane Collier will take you step by step through the felting process, starting with creating a color palette and design using a wide selection of dyed merino wool. Each student will make 2 felted soaps. And, if time and interests permit, additional soaps will be available to felt for $8 each (this fee can be paid in cash to the instructor). You may also purchase the supplies for the same price to continue felting soaps at home. The soaps used for this class are made with all natural ingredients, scented with essential oils and made in the U.S. For allergies or soap preference, students are welcome to bring their own soaps to wrap. No experience necessary. Ages 8+ welcome.

November 23, from 9:30 a.m. - Noon It’s time to get into the Winter spirit by creating Glass Nightlights or Ornaments for yourself or a special someone on your gift list. Join Instructor Suzanne Balestri on the Saturday after Thanksgiving to make holiday ornaments such as snowmen, penguins, Judaica, candles, wreaths, Christmas trees, elves, etc. Keep the season’s inspiration going, and design a nightlight to add a soft seasonal glow to any room. (Nightlight mechanism will be provided.) You’ll have a wide selection of glass colors, textures and patterns to create one-of-a-kind winter treasures. No previous glass experience needed. Suzanne will help you along the way, and will send you instructional glass cutting and grinding videos in advance of the workshop so you can become familiar with several techniques before class. All glass art will be kiln-fired after class and ready for pick up at the Collective a few days later. A $15 (cash only) materials fee is due to the instructor at the start of the class. Hours of operation are Friday 4-7 p.m., Saturday & Sunday 2 p.m. - 7 p.m. We encourage artistic freedom! You can alter the painting to fit your style and use any of our colors. Things to know: We require a 48-hour notice for cancellations/rescheduling. Refunds must be requested within 3 days of purchase. After 3 days a credit will be given.
