The Thanksgiving season is upon us. Lots of cooking and cleaning. Relatives and friends gathering together. It's a busy time of year for all of us. Would you like to take a 3-hour break doing something fun and creative? Something peaceful? In this workshop, we will do large drawings using salt on black poster board, and coffee on white butcher paper. Working from black and white reference photos provided by the instructor, you will learn some fundamental drawing techniques. These are temporary - you won't take anything home except some knowledge, and photos of your drawings. This is a meditative process that is an interesting antidote to the chaos of the holiday season. Materials: All supplies are provided—just bring your phone to take photos. She teaches for art retreats and workshops in Southern California, specializing in life drawing, portrait, and still-life drawing classes for adults and teens. Painting using imagery in art is a fun way to tell a visual story.  We use black and white photocopies of ancestors, found or real, as the underlying source to paint.  This is a way of creating expressive and fun art that can stand up to any other art form.  In this workshop, learn how to paint over a photocopy and how to properly adhere paper seamlessly to a substrate without bubbles or creases.  Students will walk away with a painting or two and an understanding of this fun process. Materials: $25 fee includes images, mediums, varnish, and substrates; use of brushes, palette knife, palette paper, varnish, markers, burnishing tool, paints. You may bring your own black and white 8" x 10" photocopy, brushes, paints, palette paper, apron, gloves, or any of the above listed supplies. December 3 is open studio time without instruction) La Jolla Studio $140/160 + $25 materials fee paid to instructor Lisa Bebi, since a small child, has loved two things: looking through snapshots in her family album and painting as expression. For over three decades, the San Diego native has married these two things together, and her work has received international awards and recognition for its content, style, and color. Lisa received her BA in fine arts from San Diego State University (SDSU), where she developed as a colorist, straddling representation with abstraction. Daughter of a journalist, Lisa always finds ways to tell the untold story she sees in snapshots. “I love the authenticity of the snapshot. It’s a single moment in time, but by painting it I can extend that moment, revel in it, and bring to life characters and scenarios that I fancy. Working this way gives me enormous pleasure.” She extracts the “behind, the behind” using innovative techniques and finesse. Over the course of her life she has received awards, accolades, and endorsements. She has been a longtime contributor to many international mixed-media magazines and several books; has taught in artist residencies locally and internationally; is a Golden Paints educator; and is often a local juror. Tuesday, November 12, 2024 Please join us for an artist talk with Carlos Castro Arias. He will share a special presentation on his Athenaeum show, The Splinter in the Eye, and how it connects to his career and process. The reception will take at 6 p.m., followed by a lecture at 6:30 p.m. Carlos Castro Arias will be exhibiting his newest project, The Splinter in the Eye, an installation composed of paintings and objects in which the artist reflects about memory, trauma, and elements of the individual and collective identity. Carlos Castro Arias is a Colombian artist, professor, and musician. He received a BA from the Universidad Jorge Tadeo Lozano, Bogota in 2002 and was awarded a Fulbright Scholarship in 2008 to the San Francisco Art Institute, where he received an MFA in painting in 2010. Castro Arias has been an associate professor at San Diego State University since 2019. In 2022, the Museo Universitario Universidad de Antioquia, Colombia exhibited a retrospective of his work entitled La Vida de las Cosas Muertas (The Life of Dead Things). Most recently Castro Arias has exhibited at Artpace, San Antonio; Bread & Salt, San Diego; LA Galería, Bogota; Quint Gallery, La Jolla, and Espacio El Dorado, Bogota. He has participated in group shows in Sweden, Peru, France, Spain, New Zealand, Mexico and Venezuela. His musical projects include: POPO (2000), Los Claudios de Colombia (2005-2010) and Amor Negro (2020). The artist lives and works between San Diego, Tijuana, and Bogota. Craig Santos Perez is a Chamoru from the Pacific Island of Guåhan (Guam). He is a National Book Award winner and the editor of nine anthologies, including Indigenous Pacific Islander Eco-Literatures. He is also the author of Habitat Threshold and From Unincorporated Territory [åmot]. For the past twenty years, he has been involved in demilitarization, sovereignty, environmental justice, and climate change movements across the Pacific.
