October is National Dental Hygiene Month. and Concorde Career College–San Diego is partnering with PDS Health to provide no-cost dental care to children ages 4–17. Adult and senior appointments will also be accepted. This event is part of a nationwide initiative to honor the dental hygiene profession, and promote the importance of preventive care and access to oral health services for children and families. All dental services are provided by Concorde Dental Hygiene, students under the direct supervision of faculty and licensed dental professionals. PDS Health is providing toothbrushes for all kids in attendance. The event is open to the public. Cleaning appointments fill up quickly, and pre-registration is required. No one will be turned away. If appointments on October 13 fill up, Concorde will work with area residents to schedule them in the coming weeks during their regular Community Dental Hygiene Clinic hours. Tacos El Franc, one of Tijuana’s most iconic and acclaimed taquerias, is opening second U.S. location in San Diego’s historic Gaslamp Quarter on Oct. 8, 2025. This new location follows the Baja-born brand’s first U.S. location at Westfield Plaza Bonita. While the Plaza Bonita location emulates the Tijuana original with table service dining, the Gaslamp Quarter location will offer a quicker, counter service, catering to on-the-go and late-night diners. Taqueros will work on charcoal grills to ensure steaks can be cooked in the traditional style – over mesquite – and the kitchen team will work in a brigade system, with individual taqueros manning the disco, steamer, and trompo. The new location will serve up staples like tacos de adobada, asada, cabeza, suadero, and tripa, plus 32oz Caguamas and Tacos El Franc USA’s signature San Diego-inspired menu item: beef tallow fries served with a variety of proteins. An accused gunman in Sydney's Bondi Beach massacre was charged with 59 offenses including 15 charges of murder on Wednesday, as hundreds of mourners gathered to begin funerals for the victims.

The series opens on Wednesday, October 29, with an Athenaeum debut by the Kris Davis Trio, featuring Davis on piano, Robert Hurst on bass, and Johnathan Blake on drums. Recognized in the DownBeat Critics Poll as Pianist of the Year in 2025, 2022, and 2020, Davis has become one of the most celebrated jazz pianists of her generation. A Grammy Award–winner, she has been described in The New York Times as a beacon for “deciding where to hear jazz on a given night.” She was named a Doris Duke Artist in 2021, alongside Wayne Shorter and Danilo Perez, and Pianist and Composer of the Year by the Jazz Journalists Association, also in 2021. Her 2019 album, Diatom Rhythms, was voted jazz album of the year by both The New York Times and NPR Music’s Jazz Critics Poll. On her latest album, "Run the Gauntlet", Davis is accompanied by the extraordinarily talented bassist Robert Hurst and drummer Johnathan Blake. “Hurst, who powered bands led by both Wynton and Branford Marsalis in the ’80s, and Blake, one of the contemporary scene’s most reliably propulsive percussionists, are both expert drivers of the beat” (The New York Times). Seamlessly melding composition with improvisation, "Run the Gauntlet" stands as a testament to Davis’s singular voice within the jazz landscape.
