  • The seasons are changing, and it’s a beautiful time of year to celebrate by creating whimsical fused glass art for your garden or windows! Your bright and cheerful sun catchers and garden sticks will make your garden, indoor potted plants, or windows sparkle! Instructor Suzanne Balestri will guide you in glass cutting techniques an design considerations to create your own artful creations to compliment your garden or to display in a sunny window. You will also receive two instructional videos a few days before the workshop so you’ll have a head start on what to expect. Students can make up to 3 pieces measuring approximately 1.5” x 11” each. All glass art will be kiln-fired after class and ready for pick up at the Craft Collective approximately one week after class. All materials are included, including 2 pre-class video instructions, and materials and firing for 3 glass pieces. Additional pieces can be made in class for $5 each (payable with cash in class). Former best friends and rival art critics reunite after decades apart, drawn together by a mysterious nine-page email and the impending death of one of them. As one flies to Berlin, he reflects on the enigmatic Renaissance painting "Saint Sebastian’s Abyss"—the work that launched their careers, destroyed their friendship, and now frames this darkly comic meditation on art, obsession, and belief.   • Creative Connections: SEL Through Contemporary Art with the ArtReach Learning Portal In this hands-on professional development workshop, educators will learn two creative projects, based on contemporary art practices, that integrate Social Emotional Learning (SEL). Participants will explore how these art forms can encourage self-expression, emotional processing, and social connection in the classroom. The session will also introduce the ArtReach Learning Portal, offering resources and tools to support SEL-focused art education. Educators will leave with ready-to-implement projects and access to a rich digital platform for continued learning and inspiration. This professional development workshop will focus on strategies art educators can use to incorporate contemporary artists into their lesson plans and to strengthen their confidence in speaking to and teaching from contemporary art. Focusing on artists from California, the San Diego/Tijuana border region, and arts resources within San Diego County, this workshop will provide culturally relevant touchstones for lesson development that reflect the intersectional identities of San Diego students. The session will provide hands-on art making activities that can then be applied directly in classrooms. In addition to supporting culturally responsive curriculum and contemporary arts focus, the lessons will also promote social emotional learning (SEL) by engaging the 5 SEL competencies of CASEL 5. Participants will walk away with resources, strategies, and lessons to immediately implement in their classrooms. All lessons are supported by the National Core Arts Standards.   • Explore clay surface design techniques — Sgraffito & Stencils! Tuesdays, June 10, 17, 24, July 1 & 15, From 6 p.m. - 8:30 p.m., with the last class of the series from 6 p.m. - 9 p.m. In this 5-week series, students will learn the basics of handbuilding to create functional pieces with an emphasis on decorative techniques. Working with mid fire clay, we will explore various methods of building forms and decorative techniques with underglazes and slips. Students will complete multiple projects throughout the course while applying handmade stencils and layering techniques with colorful patterns as well textured colorful designs using the sgraffito technique. Students will be able to utilize a wide array of glazes and colors through the course. All materials provided.
