Maybe in third grade your teacher said: “Tomorrow, children, we are going to write poems. Because everyone can be a poet.” Never does the teacher say, “Tomorrow, children we are going to write a novel.” (or a piece of creative non-fiction) So how do you become a poet? This workshop is designed to introduce you to the history of poetry today and provide a toolbox of techniques. The ultimate goal of the entire Certification process is to enable the writer to produce a publishable manuscript if so desired. In each workshop session, writing assignments or prompts will be provided as well as precise and qualitative feedback on the poems produced. Although not necessary, this workshop is designed to strongly encourage the generation of new work and the fine-tuning of previously written poems. Each participant will choose one book of poetry and one poetry craft book and submit, by week 5, a one to two page analysis of the book and its value, or not, to the individual’s poetry writing. Poem prompts will be given each week with the anticipation that the participants will generate new work. Participants are expected to actively participate in the read and critique portions of the workshop. Second Tuesday Explorations is a monthly gathering of creative writers that fosters support, inspiration, and community. Second Tuesday is a generative meeting. New topics for each session will challenge writers to explore and expand their craft. Generative writing prompts will encourage you to grow and learn in exciting new ways. The first hour will be spent introducing the prompt followed by a sustained ‘free-write’ period. During the second hour, writers will be invited to share their writing with the group. Open to writers of all genres. Sharing your work within a safe, supportive community will help you discover and strengthen your voice. Come check out Second Tuesday Explorations! Learn to make a stained glass flower in this unique 2-hour stained glass workshop! Beginners are welcome in this introductory stained glass class. Each student will create a simple one-piece flower pattern while learning to safely handle, cut and grind glass; apply copper foil; and learn soldering techniques. After your first flower is completed you may continue making as many flowers as time allows. You may also like to explore creating a two or three-piece flower pattern that will be available. Glass is included in the class price and all tools are supplied. Material fee: $5 payable to the instructor at the start of the workshop. No experience necessary. In this class you will make a gorgeous, shaped belt bag perfect for your own adventures or gifting. The skills taught in this class include: how to sew darts; sewing a lined welt zip; bias binding; and bag hardware installation. This bag is highly customizable. You will go home with the pattern and ready to practice new bag making skills. An alternative to the webbing strap could be repurposing an old belt, or from a bag you no longer use. Thrift stores are full of interesting belts and hardware to harvest from bags! This class is appropriate for a sewer with knowledge of how to use a sewing machine and sewing basics. If you’re not sure if you’re ready for this class, email and ask any questions you might have beforehand. Learn Plain Weave, Clasped Weft & Hemstitching! September 21, from 2-5 p.m. Have you wanted to dive into the mindful, rhythmic, magic of weaving? In this rigid heddle loom workshop, students will learn to weave their own unique handwoven fabric in both plain weave (a classic, simple pattern) and clasped weft (where two wefts interconnect, creating unique patterns). Each student will learn the basics of how the loom works, a variety of simple weaving techniques, plain weave, clasped weft weaving, and finally, hemstitching for a finished piece. Students will weave a length of handwoven fabric of their choosing using the techniques in-class. Looms will be pre-warped in this class and students will weave together on Ashford Looms with 100% cotton fiber for a fiber-friendly afternoon. Beginners, as well as those with weaving experience are welcome. No experience necessary.
