In this free in-person Front Row lecture, Scripps Research professor and Nobel laureate Ardem Patapoutian will discuss the molecular sensors that enable the mind to interpret different physical and chemical stimuli. These discoveries—which Patapoutian was awarded the 2021 Nobel Prize in Physiology or Medicine for—are helping answer long-standing questions in neuroscience, such as how cells communicate with each other, how we sense our body in time and space, how these sensors impact different diseases and more. Dr. Kiran Shinde will offer insights on public spaces and public art in Pune – a bustling metro in India, to illustrate how artists, designers, architects and built-environment professionals can contribute to the production of visual culture in a city. He will present several public projects that his team has implemented in Pune to inspire students and staff from different disciplines to take active roles in promoting better visual culture in their cities. He is the founder of Pune Biennale- a festival of art, design and architecture – and has organized three successful editions of Pune Biennale in 2013, 2015 and 2017 in partnership with Pune Municipal Corporation. Drawing on several projects, he will discuss a range of topics around grass-roots activism, social art, stakeholder engagement and conceptualizing projects to improve aesthetics in public spaces using public art and co-creation in cultural production. Dancing Through Prison Walls is a California-based dance and performance project whose mission is to dance with, choreograph with, and tell stories within embodied carceral landscapes and beyond, amplifying the voices of incarcerated individuals and addressing mass incarceration. This event centers a screening of the award-winning dance documentary film, Undanced Dances Through Prison Walls During a Pandemic (2021). The film highlights six choreographies written by incarcerated dancers from their bunks inside prison and sent out to "the free world." The dances are embodied and brilliantly performed by members of the Dancing Through Prison Walls community with deep knowledge in a diversity of styles including hip-hop, breaking, tap, performance art, quebradita, spoken word, butoh and contemporary dance. Following the film, Artistic Director Suchi Branfman hosts a community discussion with the Dancing Through Prison Walls team of artists.
