  • Surf Challenge for kids ages 4 - 14 The Ken Whalen Surf Challenge is in memory of Ken's love for family, surfing and the beach. The goal for the event is to encourage kids (including CAF adaptive surfers and Rady Children's Hospital Cancer Families) to strengthen their connection with surfing by competing and having a fun day at the beach with their friends and family. This event is geared towards beginner and intermediate surfers as a way in which to deepen their love for surfing. We focus more on having fun than the actual competition.   • The Hausmann Quartet and Maritime Museum of San Diego partner to present the ninth season of Haydn Voyages: Music at the Maritime, a quarterly concert series performed aboard one of the Museum’s historic world-class vessels, the 1898 steam ferryboat Berkeley that operated for 60 years on San Francisco Bay. All concerts are Sundays at 2:30 p.m., and include an intermission for a total length of under two hours. Each creative program will also include informative and entertaining commentary between selections from noted UC Santa Barbara musicologist Derek Katz. The Hausmann Quartet would like to recognize the support of pH Projects, The Conrad Prebys Foundation and the City of San Diego Commission for Arts and Culture. KPBS is the exclusive media sponsor. The study in contrasts that is September’s program will feature the first performance of a work by Johannes Brahms on the Haydn Voyages series, as his final string quartet (opus 67) anchors a program filled with exciting variety, a characteristic we’ve come to expect and appreciate in Haydn’s work; his opus 55, no. 3 on this program certainly offers its share.   • Imperial Beach Sun & Sea Festival Returns August 17 -- One of San Diego County’s largest festivals held annually on the sand at Portwood Pier Plaza is back this year featuring a gigantic monument castle, a street fair, live entertainment, and the Kids-n-Kastles competition for ages 12 and under will compete, sponsored by the Imperial Beach/South Bay Kiwanis. There will not be the traditional master's sandcastle competition but with the perfect location and ideal weather, it's a great day trip. The Sandcastle Ball will take place on Friday evening, August 16 starting 6 p.m. to midnight at Mike Hess Brewing Company on Seacoast Drive, Imperial Beach.
