  • In a comical retelling of The "Princess and the Pea," a faraway kingdom faces a royal dilemma — no one can marry until Prince Dauntless finds a suitable princess. Unfortunately, his overbearing mother, Queen Aggravain, rejects every eligible princess with her outrageous “royalty tests,” leaving the whole kingdom romantically frustrated. Desperate to marry his true love, Sir Harry sets out to find a match for Dauntless — and returns with Princess Winnifred the Woebegone, a bold and unconventional noblewoman from the swamp. Her free-spirited ways clash with the Queen’s image of royal perfection, but she quickly wins the hearts of everyone, especially Dauntless himself. Full of laughter, charm, and catchy tunes, Mary Rodgers’ "Once Upon a Mattress" is a delightful, family-friendly musical that’s sure to entertain audiences of all ages. Performances take place at the historic Sunshine Brooks Theater, 217 N. Coast Highway, Oceanside, CA. • In an era of rising political polarization and identity-driven conflict, how resistant is the United States to the threat of genocidal violence? What lessons can be drawn from societies that have experienced genocide—and how might deep-rooted cultural narratives around honor, rage, and revenge make even established democracies vulnerable? Join the San Diego World Affairs Council (SDWAC) and the SDSU Centers for Human Rights and War and Society for a vital conversation with Professor Alexander Hinton, a leading expert on genocide, cultural violence, and white power movements in the United States. Hinton is a Distinguished Professor of Anthropology, Director of the Center for the Study of Genocide and Human Rights, and UNESCO Chair on Genocide Prevention at Rutgers University. His recent book, "It Can Happen Here: White Power and the Rising Threat of Genocide in the US", explores how seemingly stable societies can spiral into violence. The discussion will be moderated by Grace Cheng, Founding Director of the Center for Human Rights at the College of Arts and Letters at San Diego State University. This event confronts difficult but necessary questions about the fragility of democracy, the power of ideology, and the warning signs we must not ignore. Free to the public, pre-registration required. Visit: https://sdwac.org/event-6263991 San Diego World Affairs Council on Instagram and Facebook
  • With autumn in the air, sweaters may come out, and we seek the vibrant fall colors of golden cottonwoods and rose-colored pickleweed. Autumn is the perfect time to explore. We may search prickly pear cactus for cochineal, a tiny insect that produces the brilliant red dye we call carminic acid, used to brighten everything from lipstick to yogurt to artists’ paints. The event is weather permitting. Wildlife is unpredictable; there is no guarantee of what you will see. Nature Collective is a local conservation and science education nonprofit organization. They work to restore habitats, provide healthier waters, and increase wildlife diversity. They are dedicated to conserving the land and providing experiences for people to fall in love with nature.
