Ravel): Pictures from an Exhibition Korean composer Unsuk Chin’s subito con forza provides a thrilling opening to a concert of music mixing savage drama with the sweetest possible melodies. Tchaikovsky’s violin concerto was written in only a few days in an unstoppable flow of passion and inspiration, while Mussorgsky’s Pictures from an Exhibition (fabulously orchestrated by Maurice Ravel) mourns the tragic early death of an artist friend; the music rages against the cruelty of his fate, remembers the sweetness of shared experiences, and, in the last movement, “The Great Gate of Kiev,” fills us all with hope for a better future. Sobremesa refers to the moments when a meal extends into lingering conversation, when guests talk, listen to music, and reflect on life and ideas. This workshop invites participants to gather in community, engage in both prompted and organic conversation, and take part in an art-making activity inspired by Castañeda’s work and practice. Poetry and storytelling, central to Castañeda’s sobremesas, will guide the flow of dialogue, sparking creativity and connection. Beginning Saturday, September 27, the event will run Wednesday through Sunday from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. Discover a dozen pumpkin varieties—from cute Fairytales and colorful Fall Fantasy to Warty Minions, Jumbo Carvers, and Lil’ Tiger Stripes—tucked throughout our 1.5-acre nursery among vibrant California natives, stone fruit trees, and bonsai.
