How does a poem hold emotional weight? In this generative poetry workshop, students will explore how contemporary poets create emotional resonance through image systems, repetition, compression, silence, pacing, and associative movement. Rather than focusing on traditional form, this class investigates how emotional pressure shapes structure and language. Through readings, discussion, prompts, and in-class writing, participants will generate new work rooted in recurring imagery, emotional tension, obsession, memory, and embodied experience. We will read work by poets such as Marie Howe, Ada Limón, Ilya Kaminsky, Sharon Olds, Aracelis Girmay, Brigit Pegeen Kelly, and Mark Doty. This workshop is ideal for poets and hybrid writers interested in creating work that feels emotionally layered, image-driven, and structurally alive. Juneteenth offers each of us the opportunity to celebrate the liberation of the enslaved ancestors of African Americans, and work together to advance racial healing, equity, and justice in our communities. The NAACP has hosted the North San Diego County Juneteenth for over 55 years. Highlights for this year's event promote the importance of education, contributions, and achievement. Highlights of the all-day event are performances, kidz zone, educational - community info outreach, free health screenings, vaccine station, local artists / musicians, and food & beverage vendors.

All participants should rent, buy, or download "The Book of Alchemy" by Suleika Jaouad before the first class. In this 8-week workshop, we will use "The Book of Alchemy" by Suleika Jaouad as a guide for a sustained creative practice. Participants will write daily for fifty days, choosing between two prompts each day. The goal is not perfection, but presence. Most prompts can be completed in 10 to 15 minutes, making it manageable even during busy weeks. We will meet once a week for 90 minutes to share selected pieces and engage in thoughtful, witness-based reflection. This is not a critique class. Instead, we will practice deep listening and generous response, noticing what lingers, what surprises us, and what themes begin to emerge across the weeks. Through daily writing and weekly gathering, participants will: - Build consistency and confidence in their writing practice - Discover patterns and images shaping their work - Strengthen their authentic voice - Experience the power of being heard without judgment - Come ready to write, to listen, and to build a sustainable writing practice.
