From the KPBS Spring Arts Guide: Playwright James Ijames won a Pulitzer Prize for drama for his spin on Shakespeare's "Hamlet," which brings us Juicy, a queer, smart, Black college student faced with the ghost of his father who shows up at a family barbecue looking for revenge. But these generational woes don't quite play out like Hamlet himself might have expected. Ijames' take is about finding agency and stepping out of the cycles of trauma and violence. There's an area in China that's home to a huge trove of dinosaur fossils. It used to be thought it was formed through a Pompeii-like volcanic eruption, stopping dinosaurs in their tracks. But new evidence has come to light about how it likely came to be.

One of the most renowned and enduring American artists of the 20th and 21st centuries, Jasper Johns (b. 1930) has had a career spanning many decades. This exhibition features 14 works on paper by Johns, ranging in date from 1960 to 2021, including six drawings on loan from the artist. Drawing has been an essential part of Jasper Johns’ artistic practice since the mid-1950s. Printmaking would assume an equally important role in his work, beginning in 1960, when he produced his first lithographs at Universal Limited Art Editions, a print studio on Long Island. His earliest etchings date to 1967. This medium would gradually become his favorite, so much so that he established his own print studio in Connecticut after moving there in 1995. Works in this display include Two Flags (1960), Figure 2 (1973), and several from The Seasons series (1985–1991). Additionally, it includes works that feature one of his most enigmatic motifs that has recently been a subject of discussion in the art world. The central figure in Green Angel, a colored etching from 1991 that the artist gifted to the Museum, along with related works, in 2006, is a mysterious juxtaposition of shapes that he used in multiple works while never revealing its source of inspiration. In 2021, art critic John Yau published evidence that the Green Angel motif very likely arose from the contours of a sculpture by Auguste Rodin (1840–1917) entitled Torso of the Woman Centaur and Minotaur. Visitors to the Museum will now have the opportunity to see the intriguing Green Angel in a new light, alongside a number of other significant drawings and prints by this iconic artist. She welcomes you to the show, thanks you for coming, and the band rips into its opening chords. As dancers rush to the floor, the smile on Mercedes’ face grows more radiant; you’re in her world and nothing else matters. You might think she was destined to do this, but you’d be wrong. Moore grew up doubting her skills, “I didn’t think that I could sing.” She says. “I didn’t think it was possible.” That was then, this is now. Today, fronting her own band, Mercedes works hard to be more than a voice. She wants fans to feel the music, the way she feels the music. Watching faces in the crowd on this night, as Mercedes swings through an extensive playlist of ballads, blues, and soul shakers, it’s obvious she has them right where she wants them. Yet, the most remarkable aspect of this story, the woman has only been singing professionally for a little more than eight years. Eight years. Let there be no doubt, Mercedes Moore is making the most of her time. As a three-time San Diego Music Award nominee, Moore performs regularly with some of Southern California’s premier musicians. The list is endless–Taryn Donath, John Simons, Mark Campbell, Marc Ramos, Tracy Wiebeck, Kurt Kalker, Matt Taylor, Steve Wilcox, Scot Smart, Missy Andersen, Sharifah Muhammad, and Laura Chavez–to name but a few. When asked, Moore is straightforward about the multitude of players. “It just makes you a better singer.” She smiles. “And different people have different strengths. Plus, I want to learn, so I can be better.” It appears to be working. Mercedes Moore is currently juggling four major projects and her music can range from blues, gospel, and R&B and swing. About Steph Johnson Steph Johnson is an award-winning, multi-dimensional recording artist and activist whose music deftly blends jazz, soul, funk and blues. Through her 20-year music career, Steph has recorded five studio albums. Her latest album "So In Love", is a collection of Johnson's favorite jazz standards and ballads. The 10-track record features pianist Josh Nelson (Natalie Cole), guitarist Anthony Wilson (Diana Krall), trumpeter Chris Lawrence, bassist Rob Thorsen and drummer Richard Sellers. “With her recent release of 'So In Love,' Steph continues her spiral upward towards bright, musical horizons.
