2024 Mother’s Day Weekend Art, Garden & Studio Tour Saturday and Sunday, May 11 and 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. 8 homes in Encinitas and South Carlsbad The San Dieguito Art Guild, a non-profit group, hosts their 27th annual Mother’s Day Weekend Art, Garden & Studio Tour. This is a self-guided, driving tour on Saturday and Sunday, Mother’s Day weekend, May 11 and 12, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Tickets are good for both days and homes may be re-visited. Take your mom or best friends on a leisurely tour of the 8 North San Diego County homes where you can peruse more than 30 unique exhibits of locally made art, and relax in each unique coastal or inland garden. Artists from the San Dieguito Art Guild will be positioned in the gardens — showing and selling their paintings, ceramics, glass, gourd art, fiber arts, photography, jewelry, and much more. Free refreshments will be served at every stop. The year’s tour includes an eclectic group of eight homes, gardens, and art studios including a mature forest with a variety of trees; a bocce ball court; a water feature using recycled parts; raised beds for vegetables; work barns where the home owner restores vintage cars and trucks; a stunning home with a 180 degree view to the ocean; outdoor kitchens; a sculpture garden where the homeowner creates with fused glass and metal; a Japanese themed garden with a bridge over a small stream and plants from Japan, including bonsai; a glass work studio, a native plants garden where over 1,000 seeds have been sown throughout; and an aviary for finches and budgies. This two-day event is the major fund-raiser of the year for the San Dieguito Art Guild. Without funds from this tour the Guild would operate at a loss. Tickets are $35 per person and may be purchased at the Off Track Gallery (937 South Coast Highway 101, Suite C-103, Encinitas), at OffTrackGallery.com, or at each home both days of the tour. Ticket sales begin in early April. Children 17 and under are free. This is a favorite tour of many San Diegans — many of whom take this tour year after year. In keeping with their Mission Statement, “The San Dieguito Art Guild is an organization dedicated to furthering artistic understanding and fostering artistic growth of members and the community at large by promoting interest, education, knowledge and skills in the visual arts”, 10% of the net proceeds from the tour will be awarded to several promising art students. In addition, one of the homes will host T.E.R.i, an organization that helps people with special needs live fulfilling lives. Spring Harp Fest promotes understanding and appreciation of the harmonica and endeavors to pass love of the harmonica on to the next generation. Founded in 1999 by Harmonica John Frazer, Chet Cannon and Budd Willis, the Spring Harp Fest was created to promote, this American artform, the blues harmonica. This event remains a first of it's kind for San Diego County where everyone involved; from webmaster, to set-up crew, from sound man, to musicians, MC to clean up crew, and all points in between; volunteers time, talent and expertise, working together to build a better future. Every year, we hold a festival during Easter weekend, and some of Southern California's finest harmonica players perform at our Spring Harp Fest. The Spring Harp Fest is a family-friendly, outdoor event located at Harry Griffen Park in La Mesa, California. There will be a $20 suggested donation requested upon entering the festival. Everyone is invited to pack a frisbee or hula hoop for the kids, water, sunscreen, blanket or beach chair. Join us for another good old fashioned afternoon in the park. Hop on by with your basket between 10 a.m. and Noon at Poinsettia Park and we will pass out eggs and treats right through your car window, ensuring you stay dry! Our bunny can’t wait to meet you and make your day egg-stra special. Join us for the City of Carlsbad’s EGGstravaganza event on Saturday, March 30 at Poinsettia Community Park. The event features face-painting, crafts and an egg scramble where kids race to collect candy-filled eggs. No registration is required to attend. How the egg scramble works: The egg scramble is ongoing from 10:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. or until eggs run out. To keep the scramble fun for all ages, one field will be designated for children ages 6 and over who want to race for their eggs, and an identical one will be for children ages 5 and under. There is also a noncompetitive field for young children, children with special needs, and for families wanting to pose for a photo opportunity. No registration is needed to attend. To avoid lines during the event, $5 activity cards and $5 unlimited fun zone wrist bands can be purchased in advance at city community centers. The cards can be divided among multiple children for all the activities; however, wristbands are per person. American Mother takes us deep into the story of Diane Foley, whose son Jim, a freelance journalist, was held captive by ISIS before being beheaded in the Syrian desert-the video shared online for all the world to see. In American Mother; Diane’s voice is channeled into searing reality by National Book Award winning author Colum McCann, who brings us on a journey of strength, resilience, and radical empathy. McCann will be in conversation with Avi Spiegel, PhD, JD, associate professor of political science and international relations. Colum McCann has received some of the world's most prestigious literary awards and honors, including the U.S National Book Award, the International Dublin Literary Prize, a Chevalier des Arts et Lettres from the French government, election to the Irish arts academy, several European awards, the 2010 Best Foreign Novel Award in China, and an Oscar nomination. Her latest novel, After Annie, is a story that ends with hope, a beautiful novel about family, friendship and the ties that bind us. What can I as an individual know? What seems out of reach? In fact, how does “knowing” come about? In everyday life, one faces such questions constantly. One is perplexed by events, by the opinions of others, with deciding how to act in circumstances with immediate or more long-term implications. In contrast, other moments can feel immediately “right”. There’s no friction. Living in this world of disrupted comfort, we seek perspective. KNOWING / NOT KNOWING is an 80-minute musical work for narrator, recorded actors, live and filmed performers, projected imagery, San Diego’s SACRA/PROFANA Chorus, and 8-channel sound movement. The work’s text has nine sections spanning Infancy and Individuation through Communality and Knowledge. Its text draws from more than two dozen sources ranging from ancient Persian and Indian wisdom, through the contemporary voices of Chinua Achebe, Wallace Stevens, James Baldwin, Simone Weil, Albert Camus, Toni Morrison, Carlo Rovelli, David Brooks, Amanda Gorman and many others.
