Claire Johnson is CEO of San Diego Magazine and SDM Studios, and co-founder of Del Mar Wine and Food Festival. She and her husband, Troy, acquired the media company in 2021–it has now been in business for 76 years. Originally from New York, she graduated from Loyola University with a journalism degree. Claire started her media career at NBCUniversal, where she worked in advertising and helped develop its Peacock platform before acquiring San Diego Magazine. Also a published photographer in publications like Vogue (and, of course, San Diego Magazine), Claire and her family live in Ocean Beach, San Diego. Explore surface design marbling & diffusion! Mondays, April 14, 21, 28, May 5 & 19 From 6-8:30 p.m., with the last class of the series from 6-9 p.m. In this 5-week series, students create functional pieces with an emphasis on decorative techniques for surface design. We will explore colorful marbling techniques and mocha diffusion. Working with mid fire clay, students will complete multiple projects and will be able to utilize a wide array of glazes and colors throughout the course. Beginning and more advanced students will learn the basics of handbuilding to create pieces that we’ll utilize the skills on that we explore in class. Materials fee $10 paid to instructor. North City is back with their free outdoor concert series North City LIVE, where live music, great food, and warm summer nights come together on September 6 from 5 p.m. to 9 p.m. Music by Eras will be performing Chic Bum Buffet, bringing the mellow magic of 70s yacht rock and the tropical twang of laid-back beach country. Recently chosen as a member of the prestigious Next Generation Jazz Orchestra that will perform at the 68th Annual Monterey Jazz Festival under the directorship of Gerald Clayton, saxophonist Kahlil Childs returns to the First Sunday series with his quartet of some of the best young jazz players in California. The concert will feature a set of original compositions by Kahlil that comprise a beautifully conceived suite in the tradition of conceptual works such as Immanuel Wilkins’s "The 7th Hand" and John Coltrane’s "A Love Supreme."
