Make a Turkey Wing Hand Broom! March 9, from 1-4 p.m. A Turkey Wing hand broom is an epic example of Appalachian folk art. It could be considered a functional tool or a decorated art piece. These brooms are made with natural broomcorn. Instructor AB will teach you the traditional techniques for binding and shaping the broomcorn, which is made from sorghum, to create a fun and unique experience…others call it a spiritual occurrence. Let’s sweep it up. Ages 13+ years and up is recommended. If you're looking for a way to blend Southern California sunshine with the festive spirit of a classic German celebration, then the Encinitas Oktoberfest & Artisan Faire on Sunday, September 28 is where you need to be! The Encinitas Chamber of Commerce and Visit Encinitas have announced that their 29th annual Oktoberfest will take place from 11 a.m. to 7 p.m. 15,000 guests are expected to attend this premier Oktoberfest in San Diego County. The ceremonial parade is slated for noon. This family-oriented and pet-friendly festival and artisan faire is free and open to the public. Live entertainment including Bavarian music and dance troupes keep the atmosphere buzzing with energy. Authentic German food, international refreshments, two beer gardens and a diverse selection of local artisan products make the event a great opportunity to eat, drink and be merry and shop for unique crafts, jewelry and other handmade goods while supporting local businesses. A special kids play zone with inflatable slides, games, crafts, face painting and a rock-climbing wall make sure there is plenty to keep the little ones entertained while the adults enjoy the festivities. And for the first time, there will be a pet costume contest where furry friends get to show off their best German-themed costumes and compete for fun prizes. As lively oompah music plays in the background, festival goers will be transported to Munich as steins of golden frothy beers flow freely and the aroma of sizzling sausages, crispy schnitzel and warm pretzels waft through the air.

The Ivey Ranch Park Association is proud to host its 15th Annual Western Hoedown on Saturday, October 11 from 3 p.m. to 7 p.m. at the Ivey Ranch Park Equestrian Center in Oceanside. This milestone year marks 15 years of bringing the community together for a relaxed, family-friendly afternoon of western-themed fun, all in support of the children and programs supported by Ivey Ranch Park. Guests can look forward to crowd favorites like horse-riding demonstrations, hayrides, music entertainment, steakhouse BBQ, raffles, a silent auction, a Kids Corral, ROTC Color Guard flag ceremony, and more. VIP guests will enjoy the comfort of reserved seating, table service, hors d’oeuvres, a steakhouse dinner, drinks, and raffle tickets in the VIP Lounge. General admission tickets are $85 and children’s general admission tickets are $65, with a $20 increase for each ticket at the door. Join us for the 3rd Annual LEE Tuh-Fuh & Ruby LEE Wang Zu-Ming Endowed Lecture featuring Dr. Satchin Panda of the Salk Institute. In his talk, “Circadian Rhythms and Intermittent Fasting and Their Roles in Promoting Healthy Lifespan,” Dr. Panda will explore how aligning eating and activity patterns with our body’s internal clock can improve metabolic health and support healthy aging. "Circadian Rhythms and Intermittent Fasting and Their Roles in Promoting Healthy Lifespan" Satchidananda (Satchin) Panda, PhD is a Professor at the Salk Institute in California, where his research focuses on the circadian regulation of behavior, physiology, and metabolism in model organisms and in humans. Dr. Panda discovered a blue-light sensing cell type in the retina entrains our master circadian clock, affects mood, and regulates the production of the sleep hormone melatonin. Recently, he discovered that maintaining a daily feeding-fasting cycle – popularly known as time-restricted feeding (TRF) – can prevent and reverse metabolic diseases. Based on a feasibility study in humans, his lab is currently carrying out a smartphone-based study to assess the extent of circadian disruption among adults. Dr. Panda has received the Julie Martin Mid-Career Award in Aging Research, Dana Foundation Award in Brain and Immune System Imaging, and was a Pew Scholar in the Biomedical Sciences. Join Linda Cassady for a journey into the literary wonderland of Charles Dodgson, better known as Lewis Carroll, through the treasured Cassady Carroll Collection of USC's Special Collections. This engaging lecture explores how a remarkable book collection has inspired students to discover the genius behind Alice's adventures, transforming some into artists in their own right. Discover the extensive works by and about Lewis Carroll housed in the University of Southern California Special Collections, and learn how an innovative Wonderland Award competition sparks the imagination of Southern California students as they pursue and rediscover Dodgson's legacy. Come see how students tumble down their own rabbit holes of creativity, finding Alice in the wonderland of their own imaginations through art, literature, and scholarly exploration. The Carroll Collection The Cassady Lewis Carroll Collection was established in 2000 and has grown to contain more than 6,000 rare books, pamphlets, letters, and other items related to the work of Lewis Carroll including inscribed editions, books from Carroll‘s own library, and many works by major illustrators of the Alice stories. There are signed copies of movie scripts, playbills from stage adaptations, Victorian-era playing cards, and pop-up books. More recently, comic books, graphic novels, manga editions, literary parodies, computer games, movies, and original art work related to Carroll and his Alice books are part of the collection. The Wonderland Award The Annual Wonderland Award is an annual multidisciplinary competition at the University of Southern California that encourages new scholarship and creative work related to Lewis Carroll. A primary goal is to promote use of the G. Edward Cassady, M.D., and Margaret Elizabeth Cassady, R.N., Lewis Carroll Collection, held in Doheny Library at USC. Since 2005, about 600 students have reimagined, reinterpreted, and remixed Carroll’s stories. Submissions include film and screenplays; poetry and readings; short fiction; book art [writing desks, boxes of wonder, missing diaries]; music, lyrics, scores, and performances; art [photography, painting, digital art, art installations]; ballet and dance; golf courses, board and digital games [with music, readings, and polysyllogisms]; illustrated novels; arts and crafts [dolls, ceramic tea sets, and fashion], and scholarly essays. Linda Cassady and her husband, George Cassady, MD, gifted a Lewis Carroll Collection to the University of Southern California in 2000. Her area of "collecting” Carroll is as a sponsor and judge of the Wonderland Award, an annual multidisciplinary competition that encourages new scholarship and creative work related to Lewis Carroll. Linda is a member of the USC Libraries Board of Councilors. She is the past president and current treasurer of the Lewis Carroll Society of North America. With a main focus on functional pottery, beginner students will learn how to use the equipment in the studio and how to use the wheel while more advanced students will further use the wheel as a tool to create work made partially or entirely from thrown forms. All students will be encouraged to experiment with surface and altering techniques to transform their work from pots to functional works of art. Students will leave the class with finished work they can use at home that’s dishwasher safe! All students receive one month of FREE MEMBERSHIP at the ICA ceramics studio following the conclusion of the course.
