ICA San Diego is pleased to invite you to the launch of our Interface season of exhibition, focusing on the theme of Art & Science. This year, we will present six exhibitions that invite audiences to consider how art can mediate, translate, and expand the relationship between humans and the science of everyday life. Please join us for an evening in celebration of SUPERFLEX. The Danish art collective is presenting their work across the ICA San Diego / North campus with their new exhibition, Beyond the End of the World. Food and drinks will be available for purchase; members receive free drink tickets. Queen Bee’s Arts and Cultural Center is brimming with talent this January, promising a month of music you simply can’t afford to miss! From doubting her abilities for years to now owning the stage with her band by her side, Mercedes Moore reshaped her destiny through sheer determination. Singing professionally for over ten years, she's become a musical powerhouse with her discography spanning blues, gospel, R&B, and classic rock. On Tuesday, January 30, you’ll not only get to see Mercedes Moore & Band perform, but you’ll also get the chance to learn a few steps from the one and only! On top of a live performance, Mercedes Moore will be instructing a swing dance lesson starting at 6 p.m. Suitable for all skill levels, Mercedes invites you to dance the night away with others in the community. In a classroom near Tehran, four adult students prepare for an English proficiency exam. They each have a reason for being there: a chance at opportunity, access, or a new calling. But as they bond over this new way to express themselves, they also grapple with the lives they must leave behind. Known both globally and regionally as the Queen of Boogie Woogie, Sultana of Swing, and Lady Who Skates on the 88s, Sue Palmer has been a beloved presence in the live music scene in San Diego and across the world for over 30 years. Her remarkable talent has led her to be inducted into the San Diego Music Hall of Fame in 2018, have a day named after her by the city in 2008, and win numerous San Diego Music Awards for her bands and albums. On Tuesday, January 16 at 6 p.m., Queen Bee’s Arts and Cultural Center will be hosting the Sue Palmer Band for an evening full of rhythm and spunk. Kym Pappas will direct the groundbreaking musical FUN HOME, the coming-of-age musical based on the graphic novel by Alison Bechdel, with book and lyrics by Lisa Kron and music by Jeanine Tesori. The play follows a woman, Alison, as she delves into her past and seeks to come to terms with the life and legacy of her father (who is exactly the same as her and still so different). This Tony-award-winning musical invites us as the audience to come to a fuller understanding of the journey of coming out and stepping into yourself.
