Exploring versatile running stitches The technique of decorating a fabric surface with running stitches can be found in many cultures. In this class students will learn 2 types of stitching: Sashiko, which means “little stabs” in Japanese, and Kantha, which translates to “rags” in Sanskrit. The primary function of the stitching was to mend and reuse old but treasured fabric; to gather layers of fabric which then provided warmth and insulation; and/or strengthen the fabric for heavy usage. However, the decorative aspect of this timeless practice became just as important and valued, and its rich “vocabulary” translates into endless pattern variations. Learn traditional Sashiko patterns using simple grid-based stitches such as “zigzag,” “field of flowers,” and traditional patterns using curves such as “ocean waves,” and “rising steam.” We will also cover the organic and flowing art of Kantha stitching. The Art-A-Thon exhibit is our biggest annual showcase celebrating ArtHatch, a charity providing free art classes, workshops and studio space to teenagers. Learn to Carve a Decorative Spoon! In this 5-hour workshop, students will learn to carve a decorative spoon in basswood in the European carving tradition. Students will learn and apply the following skills that are needed to carve a simple decorative spoon: - Carving safety - Honing/sharpening - Tracing and transfer of the spoon layout to a piece of basswood - Hollowing out the spoon; carving the back; and removing thickness under the handle - Carving out the handle - Sanding the spoon and handle Finish can be applied at home (instructor can offer shellac, which is non-toxic) This class is designed for the beginner as well as more experienced carvers. Different techniques and styles make it interesting for all skill levels. There is no prerequisite for this class. All of the necessary tools and materials will be available to students for this class. It is recommended that you bring your own safety gear (eye protection, hearing protection, dust mask, gloves).
