This class will explore the range of techniques possible when using acrylics, with emphasis on saturated color and creativity. Students will be encouraged to paint freely and spontaneously. Materials: Paint: Fast-drying acrylics are recommended, although students may opt for the “open” (slow-drying) type if they prefer. Brand names include Liquitex, Golden, Utrecht, and Winsor & Newton. Colors: Cadmium Yellow Medium, Yellow Oxide or Yellow Ochre, Cadmium Red Light, Naphthol Crimson, Phthalo Blue, Ultramarine Blue, Titanium White. Other useful colors: Brilliant Purple, Dioxazine Purple, Hookers Green Deep Hue Permanent. The first six colors and Titanium White are a must-have. Any other colors the student may have are encouraged. Brushes: Brights, #2, #4, #6. (Winsor & Newton University brand is good.); any bristle brush students may have. Caitlin’s wildly popular soft pretzel class is back! Please note that two sessions of this class will be held tonight, at 5 p.m. and 6:45 p.m. In class, each ticket holder will receive a whole batch of chilled pretzel dough to learn how to portion, roll and twist into pretzels. We’ll make traditional twists as well as unusual twists and your creations. You will take a whole tray of pretzels home. The in-class demo will cover: - How to make spent grain pretzel dough using the Grainbakers method - How to make hot cheddar cheese pub dip for your pretzels Each ticket holder will leave class with: - A tray of ready-to-boil and bake pretzels at home - 4 boiled and baked, ready-to-eat pretzels - Recipe cards for the Grainbakers Soft Pretzels, Grainbakers Hot Cheddar Cheese Dip and our Pretzel Dipping mustard - A new plastic dough cutter/bench scraper VIP / FAQ: You will boil and bake your pretzels at home, but a demo will be provided during class. We will attempt to boil and bake up to 4 of your pretzels right on site at the class. This can be a bit chaotic with a group, so your patience is required as it takes time to prepare each participant’s pretzels. Depending on the venue's size and layout, we may only be able to boil and bake one of your pretzels, but we will try to prepare four on-site for each of you. This 90-minute activity prepares you to do large batches of pretzels at home. You can take your class pretzels home and immediately freeze them to continue your project over the weekend. (Recommended!) These are whole-grain pretzels. We will be incorporating some very special caramel malted brewer’s grain. Join the San Diego River Park Foundation for a special Winter Solstice sunset hike to the top of one of our newly acquired open space properties, Lillian Hill Preserve. A top Lillian Hill, you'll enjoy breathtaking views of Three Sisters Waterfall and the expansive San Diego River Gorge, including Eagle Peak, El Capitan Mountain, and other mountain tops in San Diego! Please bring a headlamp or flashlight and plenty of drinking water for the hike. We also recommend closed-toed shoes and long pants. This hike is a 1.5-mile out-and-back trail with a 270-foot elevation gain. It is considered 'easy to moderate,' but should not be undertaken by individuals who are not comfortable on uneven trail surfaces or hiking uphill. For safety reasons, no pets are allowed at this event. Please note: This event is located in the heart of a wilderness area. For your safety, stay close to our experienced staff and volunteers throughout the event. Potential hazards include rattlesnakes, mountain lions, poison oak, and loose footing. What is Lillian Hill? An expansive 80-acre property at Lillian Hill was placed on the market for potentially five building sites. Surrounded by National Forest, its development would have had a significant impact. We set out to buy this land to conserve it forever for the badgers, cougars, eagles, falcons, majestic oaks, and more. Now that it has been purchased, we can begin removing the scars of decades of land use and start the healing process. Directions: Google Maps: Lillian Hill Attire: Long pants and closed-toe shoes are highly recommended with layers! Items to Bring: Headlamp, drinking water, light jacket, and a snack. Additional Notes: Download directions before leaving Descanso, as cell service is spotty in this area. The nearest restroom is located at the Three Sisters Trailhead parking lot, five minutes further up Boulder Creek Road. To reach the preserve, you’ll travel on a dirt road, which is in good condition and suitable for sedan cars. For safety reasons, no pets are allowed at this event. Nearly 400 of the top junior tennis players in the country, aged 16 and 18 and under, will compete for the title of National Champion. In addition, wild cards for direct entry into the US Open will be awarded to the tournament’s top finishers. The Girls’ 16s event will begin on Saturday, August 2 and conclude with the singles and doubles finals on Saturday, August 9. The Girls’ 18s tournament will get underway on Sunday, August 3 and conclude with the singles and doubles championships on Sunday, August 10. Both divisions will feature 192-player singles draws and 96-team doubles draws. The Opening Ceremony for the USTA Billie Jean King Girls’ 16s and 18s National Championships will take place at the Barnes Tennis Center on Saturday, August 2 at 4:30 p.m. (PDT). Admission is free each day of the tournament and there is no charge for parking at Barnes Tennis Center.
