Learn to needle felt! Sunday, February 9, 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. Experience the magic of wool and learn how to paint using needle felting techniques! In this 3-hour workshop, we will create a marine landscape by layering and felting wool, as well as blending colors together. The addition of yarns will add texture and hues to your creation. Ocean and sunset make wonderful subjects for needle paintings! This class requires the use of sharp needles and you will be provided with fingers guards. No experience necessary. Ages 12+ welcome. In this welcoming workshop, all levels of storytellers will be engaged in practicing the ancient/contemporary art of storytelling--no notes--Moth-style. Topics of emphasis are creating a story from a joke, mining a dramatic story for moments of levity and chortles, as well as techniques on presenting stories. We will work/play in the larger group, break into partners and small groups for joyful practice. This is a safe place in which to practice risky things. Walk-in people welcome. OTC at the Brooks presents a screening of "Shredding: A New Lens in Surf Filmmaking" on Friday, July 25 at 8 p.m. at the historic Sunshine Brooks Theater (217 N. Coast Highway, Oceanside, CA)! "Shredding" is a powerful short surf film program that challenges outdated stereotypes about who belongs in surf culture. From Morocco to Palestine to the California coast, these films spotlight surfers whose presence on the water redefines what it means to “shred.” Through stories of access, identity, and resilience, "Shredding" celebrates a new wave of surfers expanding the sport’s image—and invites audiences to reimagine surf culture as a space of joy, freedom, and connection. This special screening features work by filmmakers Rabbi Chel Mandell, Lo Frentz, Serra Soyupak, Peter Williams, Dörthe Eickelberg, Nesrine Majzoub, Zachary Zezima, Yusuf Demirörs, and Arne JinAn Wong. Sherry Hopwood will direct an ensemble cast in bringing this groundbreaking piece of lesbian history to life - a powerful play by Dian Schaffhauser that celebrates the vibrant and resilient lesbian community in San Diego from 1970 to 2000. This production is more than just a performance; it's a tribute to the stories, struggles, and triumphs of those who helped pave the way for LGBTQ+ rights. Based on hundreds of oral interviews, The Lesbians of San Diego has been dedicated to documenting the stories of local lesbians through an oral history project. This production is the next evolution of that work, ensuring that these narratives are not just archived, but embodied, experienced, and honored in a way that makes history feel immediate and alive. This play is more than a performance. It is an act of historical reclamation, an assertion of presence, and a feminist insistence that the contributions of lesbians to our collective liberation will not be erased or forgotten. These are the stories that may never have reached a newspaper or the public eye, yet they are the stories that created an incredible culture of art, music, political activism, health advocacy and more - pushing the boundaries and carving out a safe place for our community.
