The Coronado Historical Association invites you to the next lecture of our popular Wine & Lecture series. We will delve into the fascinating history of the Chinese-American experience of running a well-known, longtime establishment in San Diego. Established in 1888 and lasting nearly a century, Quon Mane’s on Fifth Avenue purveyed porcelains, silks, and other so-called Chinese and Japanese “fancy goods”. The store grew up with San Diego to become its premier Asian retail business, with branch shops in Coronado, La Jolla, and elsewhere. In a presentation richly illustrated with images from the Quon family, the San Diego History Center, and the Coronado Historical Association, you will find out how businessman Quon Mane and his brothers contributed to the founding of the Hotel del Coronado, made connections with many of the city’s biggest names, and gained a foothold in turn-of-the-century San Diego. During this presentation, you will also gain insight into what the Chinese-Exclusion era experience was like in San Diego and how it was both similar and different to the Chinese-American experience across California. The Little Italy Association of San Diego (LIA) will be officially unveiling a brand new 2,000 square foot public piazza, Piazza Costanza on Tuesday, November 28 at 10 a.m. at the corner of Columbia and W. Ash Streets adjacent to Luma Luxury Apartments. The community is invited to attend and celebrate the opening of Little Italy’s newest, and first piazza dedicated to a woman with San Diego leaders, sponsors, and community members. Piazza Costanza honors Margaret “Midge” Costanza, daughter of Sicilian immigrants, Costanza was a social and political activist who served as a top advisor and the first female assistant to President Jimmy Carter. The dedication will include commencement words from dignitaries, community leaders, and friends, as well as a unveiling ceremony with a special performance, refreshments and hors d’oeuvres. The ceremony will start with a special musical performance leading into opening remarks from LIA’s Chief Executive Administrator, Marco Li Mandri, followed by close friends from her professional career and personal life, and blessing by Our Lady of the Rosary’s Father Joe Tabigue.

Join the San Diego Archaeological Center for an in-person lecture with bioarchaeologist José “Pepe” Aguilar. Twelve burials, comprising 14 individuals, were excavated from an Early Formative Period (1950–1525 BC) site called La Consentida in Oaxaca, Mexico in 2009 and 2012. Collectively, they represent the earliest formal cemetery in the Mesoamerican west coast. Click here for more information about this event.
