  • The most anticipated installment of San Diego Filipino Cinema’s year-long programming, the San Diego Filipino Film Festival (SDFFF) is back on its third year this fall from October 3-8, 2023. Held during Filipino American History Month in October, SDFFF is SDFC's centerpiece event that aims to raise awareness for Filipino cinema as an important art form and a powerful tool for representation, education, and entertainment. SDFFF will bring San Diego communities together to celebrate diversity, culture, and heritage through cinema with a diverse mix of narrative features, documentaries, and short films. -- "My Partner" is a story of two high school seniors in rural West Maui who seemingly live in different worlds coming to learn that they aren’t so different after all. Pili (Kaipo Dudoit), an extroverted Hawaiian jock, and Edmar (Jayron Muñoz), an introverted Filipino gamer, are part of a rivalry between two senior-class friend groups at Lahainaluna High School. The rivalry comes to a head when Edmar’s group is caught overfishing a native species in a restored fresh water stream by Pili’s group. Things get interesting when Pili and Edmar’s social studies teacher assigns the boys, who are in different class periods, to work on their semester project together. Pili and Edmar strongly protest but are forced to work together. Slowly, Pili and Edmar learn that despite surface appearances, they and their cultures have much in common. As they spend time together working on their class project, they become closer — Pili learning about Filipino immigrants to Hawai’i and Edmar learning about Hawaiian culture and history. Things come to a head when their friends get into a big fight at school. Set in rural West Maui, My Partner showcases many of the current issues facing its people today.

Not having children of their own, the couple has been by themselves for the longest time, relying on manipulating neighbors into doing what they want. Delia was a movie star who always played the villain. She looks and is practically the part. Sammy was a military man and a womanizer. Sammy, who used to be strong and sharp, is now old and frail and is suffering from diabetes, gout, and Alzheimer’s. Delia takes care of Sammy. One day, Delia finds out she is dying. Delia wants to leave Sammy to a nursing home, but decides that it is not a place she wants him in. Delia travels all the way to Ilocos, in their old, beat up Mercedes Benz, in the hopes that Sammy’s only living relative, his brother Manolo, will take him in. With Sammy’s difficult personality, his illnesses, and bridges they’ve severely burned in the past, coupled with Delia’s temperamental personality, Delia fails to convince the family to forgive and take them in. Delia decides that the best place for Sammy is where he is going to be loved. Delia tracks down Carmen, Sammy’s past and longest mistress. Despite her feelings and re-opened old wounds, Delia believes this is the best for her husband. She makes peace with her decision when she realizes Sammy loves her more than he ever loved Carmen.

  • This webinar will address mid-scale composting for farms and ranches with significant quantities of organic materials, including manure. Improper disposal of organic waste is unsightly, breeds flies, and can create health issues for livestock. It can also contaminate local water sources. Using compost on your garden and landscape conserves water, mitigates erosion, sequesters carbon, and can help your plants thrive. Join us as we virtually visit Ramona’s International Equestrian Center to watch a windrow compost pile build in process and visit with site manager, Nancy Zadrozny. Nancy is a 33-year resident of San Diego Country Estates (the Estates) and the manager of the Estates’ Landscape/Open Space Manager. She has applied her background in horticulture and ecology, along with 15 years experience as vice president of an engineering construction firm, to build a vibrant and successful composting program in her community. Following County guidelines for environmental compliance, the process in its current form produces 50 cubic yards of finished compost every two weeks. The finished product is made available free to the Estates’ homeowners and is widely used for gardening, mulching and erosion control. This is a perfect opportunity for horse owners hoping to turn their manure into a valuable resource! Learn more and register here. Stay Connected on Social Media! Facebook | Instagram | X/Twitter
