Join the City Heights nonprofit for a night filled with lively energy, seasonal bites, a live and silent auction all set with beautiful views of San Diego’s harbor. Featuring a sophisticated and vibrant ambiance, the night will start with a champagne reception followed by a selection of fine wines, beers, and gourmet bites.   • Join us for Studio Arts, when OMA transforms into an artist’s studio, offering skill-building workshops led by distinguished professor and arts educator Robin Douglas. Inspired by world renowned artists, you will explore different media, techniques and subjects found in an artist’s studio. After a brief slide presentation for inspiration and context the session will continue with demonstrations. The Colors of Venice Monet was inspired to paint the reflective light off the water canals and architecture of Venice, Italy. Drawing inspiration from Monet's limited, vibrant color palette and thick brushstrokes, you will create energetic and fluid paintings that evoke visual poetry in this very special art workshop. This full day workshop held from 10 a.m.–2 p.m. is meant to get you in the art making groove and develop new approaches to seeing and creating artworks. Whether you have a lifetime practice or are new to expressing yourself, we exchange ideas and techniques in a supportive and challenging environment. Students of all levels are welcome to stretch their creative muscles and build community with us. All supplies and light refreshments for each workshop are included in the cost.   • Arts Unite at Oceanside Theatre Company (217 N. Coast Highway) launches its inaugural play reading series celebrating the work of military veteran playwrights — an evening of bold, diverse storytelling shaped by lived experience. Directed by Liz Frances, the program features six short plays by local writers Peter Mitsopoulos, Victor Lang, Mark Holley, Laura Vines, Scooter, and Janiece Jordan. While the playwrights share a background of military service, the stories themselves span a wide range of themes, styles, and experiences. The evening will conclude with a conversation with the artists, offering audiences a chance to engage more deeply with the work and creating space for dialogue, reflection, and connection.   • In welcoming U.S. President Donald Trump to Beijing in May for a summit, Chinese President Xi Jinping sought to find an answer to the question of whether China and the U.S. would be able to overcome the Thucydides Trap and create a new paradigm of major country relations. After two days of intense conversation, the two leaders offered a tentative “yes,” proposing to create a new era of what they called “constructive strategic stability.” Following in the tradition of Susan Shirk, who insists on asking difficult questions and challenging conventional wisdom, the political scientist Graham Allison will devote this lecture to examining both the promise and the limits of that vision.   • Four-day fall celebration features gourd art, workshops, demonstrations, vendors, cultural performances and family activities FALLBROOK, Calif. — The California Gourd Society (CGS), in partnership with Welburn Gourd Farm, will present the 2026 Southern California Gourd Competition and Raffle during Welburn’s Gourd Art & Harvest Days, September 24–27, 2026. The four-day event will celebrate creativity, community and the harvest season with gourd art classes, artist demonstrations, local vendors, cultural activities, music and family-friendly fun.
