Traditional Holiday Oratorio Presented in San Diego Bach Collegium San Diego (BCSD), one of the country’s leading baroque ensembles, is presenting Handel’s great oratorio "Messiah" this holiday season in San Diego and the Pacific Palisades. The oratorio will spring to life by way of the fruitful collaboration of Charles Jennens’ carefully conceived libretto and Handel’s supreme skill as a composer of the theatre. BCSD’s performance of "Messiah," delivered by a dynamic cast in the manner of Handel’s dramatic operas, has become one of its crown jewels. Soloists Estelí Gomez, soprano Jay Carter, countertenor Jacob Perry, Michael Jones, tenors Jonathan Woody, bass Handel composed "Messiah" in a breathtakingly swift 24 days. "Messiah" was originally conceived as a work for Easter, and its premiere was during Lent at the Music Hall on Fishamble Street, Dublin on April 13, 1742. The performance was offered as a charity event for the relief of prisoners, support for Mercer's Hospital, and aid for the Charitable Infirmary. There is a long-standing myth that King George II was so touched by the “Hallelujah” chorus that he rose to his feet with the crowd following. It’s impossible to confirm the truth of this legend, since this was first recorded in 1780, almost 40 years later! Audiences today routinely stand during the “Hallelujah” chorus, as a tip of the hat to this legend. BCSD is beginning an annual tradition of performing Handel’s "Messiah" in San Diego so it can become a part of locals’ holiday tradition. Learn to make your own Kombucha this Season! Sunday, September 21, from 10 a.m. - 1 p.m. Are you still paying $4 or more for a pint of kombucha? Learn to make it for pennies a pint at home! In this class, you will learn how to make delicious kombucha safely at home, including flavoring and carbonation. This workshop includes your own SCOBY and a take-home swing-top bottle of seasonal kombucha! Learn: We’ll explain fermentation and have a brief discussion about the benefits of making and eating fermenting foods, and the history and science of kombucha Demo: We’ll show you how easy it is to start making fermented foods yourself at home! We’ll demo the techniques for brewing kombucha and also flavoring & carbonating it! Taste: We’ll have a variety of various homemade kombucha flavors to sample Do it Yourself: Roll up your sleeves and make your very own bottle of kombucha with seasonal flavors *Traditionally brewed kombucha has trace amounts of alcohol, usually below 0.5% abv. Join us in Encinitas for even more ways to interact with contemporary art! Weekly Wellness Saturdays at ICA San Diego / North expands on our 2025-2026 exhibition season theme, "On Healing." The exhibitions are part of a year-long exploration of the ways artists address the various socio-cultural wounds revealed by the COVID-19 pandemic. Similarly, the associated programs and events seek to explore how art can serve as a vital tool for mental, physical, emotional, and community wellbeing. 2 - 3 p.m.: Interview with Andrew Beech in the theater 3:45 - 5 p.m.: Informal interaction with Andrew Beech in the "Doctor Who Worlds of Wonder" exhibit A founding member (in 1976) of the Doctor Who Appreciation Society (DWAS) - the show’s earliest fan club still running today, Andrew became its chairman in the 1980s and Events Organizer throughout the 1990s. Due to his unrivalled knowledge of the program since the very beginning, and his skill-set as a commercial lawyer, thereafter he has worked alongside the BBC, initially as a freelancer, to advise its commercial division (BBC Enterprises, later BBC Worldwide and latterly BBC Studios) on some of their "Doctor Who" business operations. His experiences over the last 35 years have included (1) providing Content, Production and Rights information and advice for multiple BBC departments on a myriad issues, (2) advising on the content, rights and marketing of the ‘classic’ "Doctor Who" DVD - and now Blu Ray - range, (3) supervising key elements of the public events (‘conventions’) held to celebrate the show’s 30th, 40th and 50th Anniversaries, (4) working within the BBC Studios Live Events team as Content Supervisor generally and, more specifically, as Curator/Artefacts Advisor for "The Doctor Who Experience" (2010-2017) and (5) liaising with the auction house tasked with the sale of "Doctor Who" props and costumes over the years. Learn to Warp & Weave! Saturday, September 20, from 10 a.m. - 5 p.m. (1 hour lunch) Learn the ancient fiber craft of weaving your own fabric using a Rigid Heddle Loom and natural fibers. In his hands-on workshop, Weaver & Dyer Jeanine Ertl will teach you everything you need to know to warp and weave on your own. This class is perfect for anyone who’s been curious about weaving beyond a lap loom and wants to learn the warping and weaving processes. We’ll dive into fiber & fabric and demystify the process of getting set up (otherwise known as warping a loom), weaving, and finally, finishing and removing a woven fiber good from the loom! And, you’ll go home with handwoven fabric in-hand. Length of the final piece will depend on the individual’s own pace. In this workshop you’ll learn how: a rigid heddle loom works; to plan a textile (e.g. sett, basic pattern & choosing fiber, etc.); to warp a rigid heddle; to weave; to remove your handwoven; and to finish a textile. Tuesdays, September 9, 16, 23, from 6-8 p.m. Absolute Beginner Crochet: Getting Started! In this crochet workshop, students will learn the fundamental skills of crochet, including starting a project, basic stitches like single crochet (sc), half double crochet (hdc), double crochet (dc), chain (ch) magic circle, and tying off. This three-week course will allow students to learn and practice the basics in-studio, practice at home, and then return with their questions and learn more. No experience necessary. Students are welcome to bring their own yarn and/or hook, but it is not necessary. We will be using size 4 yarn and between 4.00mm and 6.00mm crochet hooks. You don’t have to bring your own supplies but you are welcome to. All materials included. Create your own unique Sushi Set! Saturdays, September 13, 20, October 4, from 2-4 p.m. Join in for a relaxing and creative clay session where you’ll make your very own ceramic sushi set from scratch! In this beginner-friendly workshop, you’ll learn essential handbuilding techniques like slab construction and pinching to create a beautiful, functional trio: ● A slab-built sushi platter ● A matching chopstick rest ● A pinched dip bowl for soy sauce, pickles, or wasabi You’ll shape, texture, and personalize your pieces during the initial two 2-hour classes. Your pieces will then be dried and bisque fired. You’ll then return two weeks later for a glazing session to add food-safe finishes and bring your work to life. Projects will be ready to pick up 3-4 weeks after the last class. We recommend that each student bring an apron to wear and an older towel or a cloth rag. All materials provided.
