Oliva M. Espin, Professor Emerita in the Department of Women's Studies at San Diego State University, will discuss the contributions of four women to the philosophy of the 20th century: Simone de Beauvoir, Edith Stein, Simone Weil, and Hannah Arendt. Professor Espin selected these unique individuals because of the significance of their work. Although it is recognizably philosophical, these women suffered from ostracism, and their importance has been neglected, ignored, or forgotten. Rafael Payare and the San Diego Symphony Orchestra open the fifth summer season at The Rady Shell at Jacobs Park with a delectable program fitting of the occasion. The evening opens with "Ginastera’s Four Dances" from Estancia, the final dance being the spirited “Malambo.” Wynton Marsalis – one of the greatest and most celebrated trumpet musicians of all time – created a trumpet concerto that will receive its San Diego debut, at the hands of trumpet extraordinaire Paul Merkelo. EC Gallery will share a compelling selection of artworks from The Art of Dr. Seuss Collection in the Gaslamp at 621 5th Avenue, San Diego on May 10 through June 13 for FREE. Visitors may explore and acquire works from Dr. Seuss’s best-known children’s books, as well as The Secret Art of Dr. Seuss, a mind-expanding collection based on decades of artwork, which Dr. Seuss created at night for his own personal pleasure. Perhaps the wackiest and most wonderful elements of the collection are Dr. Seuss’s three-dimensional “Unorthodox Taxidermy” sculptures with names such as Carbonic Walrus, Two-Horned Drouberhannis, and Goo-Goo-Eyed Tasmanian Wolghast, to name a few. For over 60 years, Dr. Seuss’s illustrations have brought a visual realization to his fantastic and imaginary worlds. His artistic talent went far beyond the printed page and yet, to this day, his Secret Art Collection is virtually unknown to the general public. Throughout his lifetime, Theodor Seuss Geisel (aka Dr. Seuss) created paintings and sculpture, which he secreted away at the Dr. Seuss Estate in La Jolla, CA. Each of these Estate-Authorized limited editions has been adapted and reproduced from Theodor Seuss Geisel’s original drawings, paintings, or sculptures. Additionally, each work bears a posthumously printed or engraved Dr. Seuss signature, identifying the work as an authorized limited edition commissioned by the Dr. Seuss Estate. Kneebody is keyboardist Adam Benjamin, trumpeter Shane Endsley, saxophonist Ben Wendel and drummer/bassist Nate Wood. The band has no leader or rather, each member is the leader; they’ve developed their own musical language, inventing a unique cueing system that allows them each to change the tempo, key, style, and more in an instant. The group met in their late teens while at The Eastman School of Music and Cal Arts, became fast friends, and converged together as Kneebody amid the vibrant and eclectic music scene of Los Angeles in 2001. Since then, each band member has amassed an impressive list of credits and accomplishments over the years all while the band has continued to thrive and grow in reputation, solidifying a fan base around the world. The group’s first full-length album, Chapters, mixes deep grooves and deft melodies with a wide range of guests, including Becca Stevens, Gretchen Parlato, Michael Mayo, Gerald Clayton, and Josh Dion. Robin Adler, and her husband, guitarist Dave Blackburn, have devoted the last 18 years to exploring the fascinating music of the iconic Joni Mitchell, through its many incarnations over the decades. Together with their band, named Mutts of the Planet after a lyric line in one of Mitchell’s songs, Adler and Blackburn have performed six of Joni’s albums in their entirety, and released two albums of their own of original arrangements. Robin is widely known around the world as one of the premier vocalists to perform Joni Mitchell’s work. Joining Robin and Dave will be keyboardist Barnaby Finch and Jim Reeves on bass.
