  • This August 27, join Library Shop SD at our Mission Hills location for a conversation with Elizabeth DeLozier and KPBS’ Julia Dixon Evans on "The Whitechapel Full Moon Society," the new novel from the author of "Eleanor of Avignon." This event will include a conversation, Q&A, and author signing. Proceeds from all book sales support the San Diego Public Library. ABOUT THE BOOK Set in Victorian London during Jack the Ripper’s reign of terror, this gripping, original novel is perfect for fans of V. E. Schwab, Dana Schwartz, and Sarah Penner. When Caroline Foster arrives at the Whitechapel Full Moon Society in search of her missing brother, she finds a dilapidated façade belying an interior as opulent as any exclusive gentlemen’s club. In exchange for room and board, Caroline is hired as the Full Moon’s maid, where she is given three orders: don’t ask personal questions, stay out of the iron-barred room on the second floor, and remain in her bedroom from sunup to sundown on the full moon. But when it is revealed that the previous maid was murdered— an early victim of Jack the Ripper— and her brother has left behind no answers, only more questions, Caroline begins to suspect her hosts might be hiding something. As more bodies turn up with a connection to the Society, Caroline fears she may have unwittingly stumbled into a bedtime story, the kind with monsters and curses, family secrets and ancient lore. Tantalizing and pulsing, Elizabeth DeLozier’s sophomore novel gives an exciting alternative look into the infamous Jack the Ripper story with a major, supernatural twist. ABOUT THE SPEAKERS Elizabeth DeLozier holds a BA in Spanish literature, a BS in biological anthropology, and a doctorate in physical therapy. A practicing pelvic floor physical therapist, chaotic Virgo, and vegetarian, she lives in San Diego with her husband, twin sons and rescue dogs. • Join us for lunch at Pacifica Del Mar on Thursday July 16th at 11:30 a.m. as we welcome Dan Werb to discuss and sign "Our Wild Familiars: How Animals Are Adapting to Cities and Reshaping the Natural World." The ticket will include one copy of the book and lunch at Pacifica including tax, gratuity and a beverage (soda, tea, coffee). A vegetarian option will be available. About the book: A dazzling journey into the hidden lives of synanthropes, the wild animals who’ve found ingenious ways to survive and thrive in human communities—from award-winning writer and scientist Dan Werb. Synanthropes have always been an immutable part of the tapestry of our lives. They are the reason we hear birdsong in the morning and skittering throughout the day, and why we take such pains to fix lids to our garbage cans. But they are so much more than that, too: epidemic vectors, churners of soil, ecosystem evolvers, spiritual lodestars, and, sometimes, sharp-toothed marauders making their way through our most intimate spaces with cruel intent. But beyond their quotidian impact on our lives, synanthropes have a critical part to play in how our communities are shaped and how sustainably they function. These creatures are ambassadors from nature, arbiters of our planet’s future, and a key influence on our species’ ongoing evolution; and recently, something essential has shifted with them. We are in a fraught era of environmental disruption, habitat destruction, and human population expansion that is ravaging formerly wild and untouched habitats. That’s caused us to become ever more inundated with synanthropes, which are bringing delight, chaos and danger to our doorstep. These species, so long dismissed, are forcing us to reckon with them—from the hundreds of thousands of raccoons in urban spaces that spread our refuse no matter how many "raccoon-proof" bags and bins we invent, to the invasive kudzu plants that grow a foot a day, enveloping houses, telephone poles, trees, and any other structures into their green abyss. Now, as urban spaces increasingly become wild spaces, we have a choice: continue to resist them by any means necessary, or take the opportunity to promote a more harmonious coexistence. Through vivid storytelling, "Our Wild Familiars" brings to spectacular life the world’s most successful synanthropes, from bats, raccoons, and crows, to some of its weirdest, including the Giant Pacific Octopus. Acting as a guide to the curious, Werb reveals how the cracks in our millennia-long efforts to shield ourselves against the outside world might just lead us to a new and necessary balance with nature—or to an ever more savage future. • The Future of Mental Healthcare: Global Experts Present the Major Scientific Advances Reshaping Clinical Practice at IMMH 2026 Mental healthcare is entering a period of significant scientific change. New evidence across metabolism, nutrition, neurodegeneration, hormones, inflammation and the gut-brain connection is challenging long-held assumptions about the causes, assessment and management of mental illness, while prompting clinicians to adopt more personalised approaches to care. According to the World Health Organization, more than one billion people worldwide live with a mental disorder, with anxiety and depressive disorders the most common.1 In the United States, around one in five adults experience a mental illness each year,2 underlining the need for more eHective and personalised approaches to prevention, assessment and management. The Integrative Medicine for Mental Health (IMMH) Conference 2026, taking place from 8 - 11 October in San Diego and online, will bring together many of the world’s leading clinicians, researchers and practitioners to present the latest scientific discoveries, clinical evidence and therapeutic innovations shaping integrative mental healthcare and functional psychiatry. Dr Felice Gersh, Medical Director of the Integrative Medical Group of Irvine and AHiliate Faculty for the Fellowship in Integrative Medicine at the University of Arizona School of Medicine, commented: "We are finally moving beyond the idea that mental health exists only in the brain or only in neurotransmitters. We are beginning to understand that the brain is part of a whole-body system. It is energy dependent, immune connected and profoundly hormone responsive." At this year’s event, Dr Felice Gersh will be joined by headline speakers including Dr Robert Lustig, Dr Dale Bredesen, Dr James Greenblatt, Dr Emeran Mayer and Dr Bessel van der Kolk, alongside more than 40 other internationally recognised experts whose research and clinical work is advancing understanding across psychiatry, psychology, neuroscience, functional medicine, trauma, nutrition and whole-person mental healthcare. Kirkland Newman, Founder of MindHealth360 and Executive Director of IMMH, commented: "Mental healthcare is at an inflection point. For too long, clinical practice has been organised primarily around diagnosis, but the science is increasingly showing us that we also need to ask what is driving each person’s illness. Two people with the same diagnosis may have very diEerent underlying biology, life experiences and environmental exposures, and may therefore require very diEerent approaches to care. IMMH brings clinicians together with the experts leading these advances, helping them understand what is changing and how it can be translated into better patient care." Metabolic psychiatry emerges as one of mental healthcare’s fastest-moving fields Growing evidence is transforming understanding of the relationship between metabolism and mental illness, with metabolic psychiatry rapidly becoming one of the most significant developments in the field. Recent clinical findings, including what Schizophrenia Bulletin describes as the first randomised controlled trial assessing the eHects of ketogenic diets on metabolism, psychiatric symptoms and cognition in people with schizophrenia-spectrum and bipolar-1 disorders, are adding to the evidence base for metabolic approaches to severe mental illness. Dr Robert Lustig, Dr Elissa Epel and Dr Matt Bernstein will present new insights exploring how metabolism, cellular energy production and nutrition are challenging conventional thinking about the biological drivers of psychiatric disorders. Personalised mental healthcare challenges traditional diagnosis-led care Dr James Greenblatt, Dr Dale Bredesen, Dr Kat Toups, Dr Richard Horowitz and Dr Jill Carnahan will present the latest evidence supporting more personalised approaches that integrate nutrition, hormones, metabolism, immune function, infection and environmental factors into clinical assessment and management. The same shift is influencing approaches to cognitive health. New clinical evidence suggests that identifying and addressing underlying biological contributors earlier may help improve long- term brain health and raise new possibilities for preventing or slowing cognitive decline before irreversible damage occurs. New biological insights are expanding understanding of mental illness Research into hormones, inflammation, immune function, infection and the gut-brain connection continues to broaden understanding of the biological systems influencing mental health. In her CE/CME session, Mitochondrial Function, Mental Wellbeing and Hormones: A Vital Connection, Dr Felice Gersh will present new evidence highlighting the relationship between women’s hormonal health and mental wellbeing across the lifespan. Alongside sessions from Dr Emeran Mayer, Dr Neil Nathan, Dr Kelly McCann and Dr Richard Horowitz, delegates will hear how emerging biological research is expanding understanding of mental illness and opening new possibilities for clinical practice. Trauma science continues to evolve Alongside these biological advances, trauma research continues to deepen understanding of how psychological experiences influence the brain, nervous system and physical health. Sessions with Dr Bessel van der Kolk, Dr Richard Schwartz and Dr Stephen Porges will explore the latest developments in nervous system regulation, embodiment, Internal Family Systems and Polyvagal Theory, helping clinicians better understand how traumatic experiences become biologically embedded and how recovery can be supported through the nervous system. Beyond these major themes, IMMH 2026 will also present new developments in psychedelic-assisted therapies, nutritional approaches to eating disorders, environmental medicine, neuroinflammation and the therapeutic role of creativity and movement, demonstrating how rapidly the boundaries between psychiatry, neuroscience, functional medicine and lifestyle medicine continue to evolve. IMMH 2026 will take place at the Town and Country Resort, San Diego, and online from 8 - 11 October 2026 with more than 50 internationally recognised speakers and an expected audience of more than 2,000 attendees across in-person and virtual participation. The conference combines keynote presentations, workshops, panel discussions, interactive sessions and CE/CME-accredited educational content designed to help clinicians translate the latest evidence into everyday practice.
