Born in Mexico City (CDMX) and raised in Santa Cruz, California, Jorge Mendoza is a multidisciplinary artist whose work spans borders and mediums. Over the past 12 years, he has lived and worked in San Diego and Tijuana, expanding his artistic practice through screen printing, woodcuts, ceramics, installation, sign painting, murals, photography, art organizing, and curating. As a largely self-taught artist, Jorge embraces exploration, experimentation, and lifelong learning, continuously evolving through travel and new creative experiences. His artistic reach extends from San Francisco to Todos Santos, Baja California, and throughout Mexico City. His latest exhibition delves into the unseen, posing the question: How can we visualize what we cannot see? Through experimental mixed media, and layers of acrylic and oil on canvas, Jorge seeks to capture invisible forces, translating raw energy into tangible, evocative art. The exhibition also features a video installation—a compilation of short films documenting the creation of his murals. Currently, Jorge is in residence in Tijuana, where he hosts creative gatherings, welcoming visitors to experience his work and engage with the vibrant cultural landscape of the city. Whether it’s a childhood companion or a cherished gift, learn hands-on techniques to mend, reinforce, re-stuff and restore plush toys. As we stitch and stuff, I will share stories of healing and celebration as we transform sentimental fabrics into custom keepsakes that honor spatial memories. This workshop teaches the art of repair — a place where every stitch tells a story, and where life’s moments, big and small, are celebrated with love. It is recommended that you wash your plush toy ahead of time planning for plenty of time for it to dry thoroughly. Use your best judgement on whether it should go in the washing machine or be gently hand washed. The San Dieguito Art Guild, a non-profit group, hosts their 28th annual Mother’s Day Weekend Art, Garden & Studio Tour. This is a self-guided, driving tour on Saturday and Sunday, Mother’s Day weekend, May 10 and 11, from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. each day. Tickets are good for both days and homes may be re-visited. Take your mom or best friends on a leisurely tour of the 8 North San Diego County homes where you can peruse more than 30 unique exhibits of locally made art, and relax in each unique coastal or inland garden. Artists from the San Dieguito Art Guild will be positioned in the gardens — showing and selling their paintings, ceramics, glass, gourd art, fiber arts, photography, jewelry, and much more. Free refreshments will be served at every stop. The year’s tour includes an eclectic group of eight homes, gardens, and art studios including a garden that has been almost 50 years in the making, an outdoor kitchen/bar, a chicken coop, a vineyard with several varieties of grape vines, a patio area with a spiral stair case, a lawn that was torn out and replaced with special tiles made on site by the hosts, a beautiful view of the ocean, a meticulously tended rose garden, a built-in wine cellar, a serene babbling brook, and twin stag horn ferns. This two-day event is the major fund-raiser of the year for the San Dieguito Art Guild. Without funds from this tour the Guild would operate at a loss. Tickets are $35 per person and may be purchased at the Off Track Gallery (937 South Coast Highway 101, Suite C-103, Encinitas), at each home both days of the tour. Ticket sales begin in early April. Well behaved children 17 and under are free. This is a favorite tour of many San Diegans — many of whom take this tour year after year. In keeping with their Mission Statement, “The San Dieguito Art Guild is an organization dedicated to furthering artistic understanding and fostering artistic growth of members and the community at large by promoting interest, education, knowledge and skills in the visual arts”, 10% of the net proceeds from the tour will be awarded to several promising art students. In addition, one of the homes will host "T.E.R.i," an organization that helps people with special needs live fulfilling lives.
