  • Studio ACE Gallery invites artists of all levels and backgrounds to submit work now through Sunday, January 25, 2026, for "Common Threads: The Fabric of Our Community," a juried exhibition celebrating the rich, expressive world of textiles and fiber arts. Call for Artists Closes: Sunday, January 25, 2026 To Apply: https://artist.callforentry.org/festivals_unique_info.php?ID=16630 Textiles—among the oldest and most universal artistic mediums—carry stories in every stitch. Woven, sewn, dyed, layered, felted, quilted, knotted, or repurposed, fiber-based materials offer a tactile language that speaks to memory, identity, resilience, and cultural tradition. From the intimate textures of handwork to bold contemporary experiments with fabric, thread, and mixed media, textile art reminds us that creativity is something we all touch, wear, and share. This exhibition seeks works that explore connection—connections between people, cultures, materials, and ideas. We welcome pieces that honor traditional craft, push the boundaries of fiber as a modern art form, or reimagine textiles in unexpected ways. Whether your work is deeply personal, abstract, conceptual, or rooted in community stories, we want to hear your voice. Join us as we bring together the diverse perspectives that make up the fabric of our community. "Common Threads: The Fabric of Our Community" will be on view at ACE Gallery (inside Studio ACE) from Saturday, February 21, through Friday, March 27, 2026, with an opening reception celebration taking place on Saturday, February 21, from 5-7 p.m. Studio ACE on Facebook / Instagram
  • "Non-Objective Lessons: Explorations in San Diego Abstraction" celebrates the region’s long-standing tradition of abstraction, experimentation, and boundary-pushing artistic inquiry. Drawing inspiration from influential figures such as John Baldessari, Robert Irwin and Bob Matheny, the exhibition brings together artists who continue San Diego’s legacy of conceptual play, non-objective exploration, and material rebellion. Through assemblage, minimalism, and unexpected interventions, the featured works examine the tension between structure and improvisation, and the joyful misbehavior that defines much of the city’s avant-garde. The exhibition features works by a mix of artists affiliated with Space 4 Art and Art Produce, as well as other local practitioners who engage in abstract and non-objective art-making. This exhibit features artists Melissa Walter, Xavier Dionne, Joey Thurston, Kaori Fukuyama, Jonny Hoolko, Jennifer de Poyen, May-ling Martinez, Lynn Susholtz, Andrew Alcasid, Meghan Augustine, Elijah Rubottom, Brennan Hubbell, Thomas DeMello, and Michael James Armstrong. • A special screening of the film that brought reggae music to the world and made the late Jimmy Cliff a global icon. Blessed with one the best soundtracks ever put on film, "The Harder They Come" is a gritty and razor sharp vision of working class life in Jamaica, a ground-breaking film that demonstrated that music and art can change the world. Jimmy Cliff who died in 2025 plays Ivan, a young songwriter who leaves the country for the big city to find his fortune. His dreams of making it in the music business and his battles with crooked promoters, religious conservatives and criminals on both sides of the law make him a folk hero. Shot in 1972 at the dawn of the blaxpoitation era in American movies following the success of Sweet Sweetback’s Baadasssss Song, Shaft, and Super Fly, this Jamaican film is a significant achievement in the development, in the 1970s, of both an international Black popular culture and worldwide Black independent film movement. Professor Mychal Odom of Mesa College will facilitate a Q&A session after the film Register now
