From the KPBS San Diego weekend arts preview: Visual art | Saturday is the monthly Barrio Art Crawl, where galleries, shops, restaurants and the sidewalks come alive with art and culture. Highlights this weekend include the spooky season installment of the Logan Ave. Artisan Market, which runs from noon to 6 p.m. near the VFW. Then, at Bread & Salt in Logan Heights, check out a risograph print pop-up from artist Philip Brun Del Re and new work in the Quint ONE space by Lisa Sigal. Still on view are Hugo Crosthwaite in the main gallery; "What's Your Type" at Athenaeum Art Center; and INSITE LAB at Best Practice. Also, don't miss open studios with Bread & Salt's current Impact Artist in Residence, sign painter Koy Sun. The Thanksgiving season is upon us. Lots of cooking and cleaning. Relatives and friends gathering together. It's a busy time of year for all of us. Would you like to take a 3-hour break doing something fun and creative? Something peaceful? In this workshop, we will do large drawings using salt on black poster board, and coffee on white butcher paper. Working from black and white reference photos provided by the instructor, you will learn some fundamental drawing techniques. These are temporary - you won't take anything home except some knowledge, and photos of your drawings. This is a meditative process that is an interesting antidote to the chaos of the holiday season. Materials: All supplies are provided—just bring your phone to take photos. A New York transplant, Jean studied at the Huntington Fine Arts League, Friends World College, and the Art Students League. She teaches for art retreats and workshops in Southern California, specializing in life drawing, portrait, and still-life drawing classes for adults and teens. Her work has been shown in many group and solo shows in San Diego and New York. She has a knowledge and enthusiasm for drawing that she brings to her classes, with expertise in a variety of mediums. All Levels Wheel Throwing Class Schedule Saturdays, 11 a.m. – 2 p.m. Six-Week Session January 25, February 1, 8, 15, 22, March 1 Teaching Artist Max Anderson Description With a main focus on functional pottery, beginner students will learn how to use the equipment in the studio and how to use the wheel while more advanced students will further use the wheel as a tool to create work made partially or entirely from thrown forms. All students will be encouraged to experiment with surface and altering techniques to transform their work from pots to functional works of art. Students will leave the class with finished work they can use at home that’s dishwasher safe! The annual Wildlife in Art show, hosted by the Foothills Art Association is one of Southern California's longest running show. The opening of this year marks our 35th consecutive year. All artists are invited to submit Wildlife art in various mediums. We anticipate over 100 submissions. Ken Goldman an internationally renowned wild life artist, author and teacher is this years juror. The show is from October 29th to December 4th. The awards reception will be on Saturday November 2nd from 3 p.m. - 6 p.m. Music will be performed by the Paul Marcus trio. Appetizers and refreshments will be served. The San Diego Pottery Tour is a self-guided tour of 15 local ceramics studios December 7 & 8. No tickets are required. It's a cooperative effort by over 40 of San Diego's best potters, and takes place across San Diego urban area from Spring Valley to La Jolla. The goal of the SD Pottery Tour is to promote the ceramic arts through an annual open studio tour that takes place in early December each year. In honor of All Saints Weekend, enjoy an art exhibition by artist Gracie Morbitzer who paints modern day depictions of saints. She combines the character, correct age, ethnicity, and modern style to show just how human the saints were – just like us. The art will be accompanied by music from First United Methodist Church of San Diego's Jubilee Singers, Chamber Choir, and youth ensembles. The choral concert will include hymns and anthems conducted by Brian Lustig and Dana Zimbric. Come enjoy the art, music, and light a candle for the saints in your life.
