Two short operas that got their premieres at the Kennedy Center in Washington, D.C. feature Black female protagonists.

Dancing Through Prison Walls is a California-based dance and performance project whose mission is to dance with, choreograph with, and tell stories within embodied carceral landscapes and beyond, amplifying the voices of incarcerated individuals and addressing mass incarceration. This event centers a screening of the award-winning dance documentary film, Undanced Dances Through Prison Walls During a Pandemic (2021). The film highlights six choreographies written by incarcerated dancers from their bunks inside prison and sent out to "the free world." The dances are embodied and brilliantly performed by members of the Dancing Through Prison Walls community with deep knowledge in a diversity of styles including hip-hop, breaking, tap, performance art, quebradita, spoken word, butoh and contemporary dance. Following the film, Artistic Director Suchi Branfman hosts a community discussion with the Dancing Through Prison Walls team of artists. The Library's Autumn Concert Series takes place on Fridays from September 6 to October 25. Each concert will begin at 1 p.m. in the Winn Room. Doors will open 15 minutes prior to the performance. We close out this year's series with Adrienne Nims, who will take us on a musical journey with lush harmonies, mystical melodies, and global rhythms. Adrienne Nims’ passionate energy and dazzling musicianship are well acclaimed; As featured solo artist, or with her talented band, Spirit Wind, Adrienne creates an unforgettable and inspiring entertainment experience. Adrienne’s dynamic, sensual voice on the saxophones, flues, and many more global indigenous instruments express not only a vast array of musical culture and style, but also the magic and mystery of Life! Spirit Wind, Adrienne’s own band, feature Adrienne on soprano, alto, and tenor saxes, as well as many different flutes, including traditional western, Native American, Indian, African, and Asian flutes, performing contemporary jazz and global music throughout the United States and internationally. Campana Studios is excited to present ‘Feral’, an upcoming show of paintings by Elizabeth Brown at Perspectives Space, July 20th-August 1st, with an artist’s reception on July 20th from 6-9pm. Elizabeth Brown is a California based artist who explores the relationship between personal narrative and visual engagement. Her playful, expressive and colorful paintings reveal the tension between freedom and control, as well as thought and emotion, the physical and ephemeral. In these vibrant paintings, Elizabeth has multiple vantage points, seeing her world and the world of others, both predator and prey, to create dynamic compositions.
