  • A stunning combination of cars and books will converge on Rancho Buena Vista High School in Vista on Saturday, October 25, for the second annual Lowriders for Literacy event. The event brings together a diverse display of lowrider cars, gathered to encourage the community to ignite a love of reading. And while the two topics may seem worlds apart on the surface, the event organizers stress that the two share powerful similarities. By drawing parallels between the time and effort required to build a lowrider and the skills needed for literacy, the event seeks to make reading more approachable and engaging for students and families. The event will take place on Saturday, October 25, from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Rancho Buena Vista High School. A number of car clubs from across San Diego County are participating, coordinated in part by an RBV parent active in the lowrider community. The event will also feature two food trucks and an ice cream truck. Local libraries, including Vista, Oceanside, and the John Landers Community Center, as well as the San Diego Libros chapter, are involved in the event. Education Begins in the Home, a San Diego literacy organization, will donate books suitable for all age ranges, from pre-K to 12th grade. The event also features performing arts groups from the Vista Unified School District, including Mariachi and Ballet Folklórico performances. “Strong literacy skills open doors—to higher education, careers, and lifelong learning,” says RBV Assistant Principal Garry Dillard. “For students of color, literacy is especially vital in navigating systems, telling their stories, and shaping their futures. By pairing literacy with lowrider culture, we remind our students that learning is not just about school—it’s about pride, identity, and community.”

  • "M(other) Tongues" brings together artists who use textile to examine the interconnected experiences of migration, displacement, and cultural inheritance. Drawing on textile traditions rooted in women’s domestic and communal practices, the works approach stitching, weaving, and dyeing as forms of mark making—methods of carrying ancestral stories across borders and generations. In "M(other) Tongues," cloth becomes both archive and language, expressing the tensions of uprooting and the desire to remain connected to one’s past. Each piece invites viewers to reflect on how identity is continually woven from personal narratives, shared histories, and the ongoing work of becoming. San Diego Public Library on Instagram
  • In a comical retelling of The "Princess and the Pea," a faraway kingdom faces a royal dilemma — no one can marry until Prince Dauntless finds a suitable princess. Unfortunately, his overbearing mother, Queen Aggravain, rejects every eligible princess with her outrageous “royalty tests,” leaving the whole kingdom romantically frustrated. Desperate to marry his true love, Sir Harry sets out to find a match for Dauntless — and returns with Princess Winnifred the Woebegone, a bold and unconventional noblewoman from the swamp. Her free-spirited ways clash with the Queen’s image of royal perfection, but she quickly wins the hearts of everyone, especially Dauntless himself. Full of laughter, charm, and catchy tunes, Mary Rodgers’ "Once Upon a Mattress" is a delightful, family-friendly musical that’s sure to entertain audiences of all ages. Performances take place at the historic Sunshine Brooks Theater, 217 N. Coast Highway, Oceanside, CA. • NOTE: The reception will take place on Saturday, January 17 at 7 p.m.(not Friday at 6:30 p.m. as previously noted). A Multi-Sensory Exhibition Curated by journalist and Emmy-nominated host Anissa Ocansey "EFORI" is a multi-sensory art exhibition exploring the profound relationship between scent and human perception. Rooted in both scientific inquiry and cultural frameworks, the exhibition examines olfaction as a powerful repository of memory, identity, and interpretation. Through carefully composed sensory environments, "EFORI" invites viewers to consider how smell shapes the way we experience, recall, and understand the world around us. The exhibition features original scents created from ethically sourced botanicals, each paired with three to four visual accompaniments. These include paintings, interactive installations, and digital media works that respond to and amplify the emotional and conceptual qualities of each scent. By pairing curated fragrances with corresponding visual elements, "EFORI" presents the macrocosm alongside the microcosm—moving between the intimate and the expansive, the scientific and the poetic. Visitor engagement is central to the exhibition experience. Guests are invited to interact with scent samplers, access QR-code–triggered audio reflections, and contribute to an interactive reflection wall. A micro gift shop will also be available, offering limited-edition scents developed specifically for the exhibition. Together, these elements create a layered sensory dialogue—one that foregrounds smell as both an interpretive lens and an artistic medium, revealing the subtle yet profound ways scent influences perception, emotion, and meaning. Validated parking is available in the LAZ garage for event attendees. Brokers Gallery on Facebook / Instagram
