In this month-long series, kids learn a wide variety of traditional crafts from professional artist-educators. Creating with one’s hands and imagination with thoughtful and engaging crafts allows your child to express themselves in a creative way. They’ll build fine motor skills, eye-hand coordination, and grow an understanding of a variety of materials from textiles and clay to wood. This nurturing learning environment makes space for each child to develop their own unique artistic style. Projects encourage problem solving through imaginative and innovative ways, using foundations in the craft realm: wood, fiber, clay, paper, found objects, and glass. Young students will make beautiful pieces to take home over the course of the series. The variety of mediums teach dexterity using safe materials. Each project encourages craftsmanship, follow-through, and material exploration. Art projects are switched up monthly, so repeat students are welcome and encouraged! Drop-ins are welcome! This solo show "Treacherous Titties" celebrates Badillo’s journey of being “Cancer free” as well as creating dialogue and awareness through raw imagery and content. Bobbylicious brunch by Chef Sunny Soto create your own booby pancakes! Errverybodi line dancers led by Patricia Murray, a breast cancer survivor. Poetry reading from Berenice Badillo’s poetry book Treacherous Titties. Berenice Badillo was diagnosed with invasive breast cancer in 2023, right in the middle of the restoration of a 1997 historic mural in Chicano Park that she painted when she was a twenty-three-year-old. Chicano Park houses the largest collection of Chicano murals in the world. She was also a recipient of The Far South Border North grant and the Living cultures grant. In the effort to not “waste her pain” as suggested by Audre Lorde in The Cancer Journals (1980), Badillo created content that explored taboo subjects on her journey through Cancer. This included educational videos, a resource website, a poetry book that will be given to newly diagnosed patients, and artwork that will be showcased in her solo show “Treacherous Titties.” Badillo and her girl gang XoQue art in motion completed the sixty-five-foot mural, the largest mural in Chicano Park done by women, for women, about women. The Coronado bridge needed to be shut down for its completion and Badillo along with playwright Mabelle Reynoso created a short documentary of the process. Celebrate National Carousel Day at the Dorothea Laub Balboa Park Carousel on Thursday, July 25, from 11 a.m. to 5:30 p.m. National Carousel Day is a FREE community event presented by Forever Balboa Park, offering free carousel rides all day, family friendly activities, and entertainment. Entertainment and activities include a family-friendly DJ, circus performers by J7 Productions, face painting, photo booth, craft activity with Spanish Village Art Center, and activities with the San Diego Natural History Museum. Food will be available for purchase from local vendors Golden State Dogs and Ice Cream and Toro Churros and Doughnuts.
