The September 25 session connects Social Science and Media Arts and covers the essential question: How can photography be used to capture and communicate the essence of daily life in a way that helps future generations understand our present? Participants will utilize photography to investigate historical documentation and to connect with their present-day experiences. Our hands-on, two-hour participatory workshops are designed to provide elementary educators with the tools and strategies you need to seamlessly integrate media arts into your core curriculum (English Language Arts, Math, Social Science and Math). A festive opportunity to learn the history of this beautiful holiday, featuring live music performances, a new coLAB play in collaboration with our community of Casa Familiar, arts and crafts for kids, a puppet show, workshops, and more. Sunday, October 27, 2024, from 11 a.m. to 1:30 p.m. at the Globe’s outdoor Copley Plaza in Balboa Park. This free, family-friendly event is a festive opportunity to learn the history of this beautiful holiday, featuring Aztec dance performances by Danza Azteca Kuauhkoalt, live music performances by Zhiely Monraz and guitarist Ricardo Arredondo, a puppet play by Gastón Morineau and Veronica Burgess, and our new CoLAB play written by Crystal Mercado and members of our community partners at Casa Familiar, directed by our very own Valeria Vega. We will also have a puppet parade and drum workshop led by The San Diego Guild of Puppetry and Drummers Without Borders, and the talented visual artist Natalie Gonzalez presenting her original art piece titled “Ojos de Dios” (Huichol “God’s Eyes”), will also lead a workshop for audience members to create their own piece to take home. It is a code message sent to a timeless future: this is who we were; what we believed; what we valued.” — Linda Blair This lecture will be a meditation on Jan Vermeer, an artist celebrated in literature and movies today, but after his death, forgotten until the 1850s, when a French art critic stumbled upon a masterpiece (View of Delft) by a mysterious artist he thought might be named Meer and devoted the rest of his life to searching out more “Meers.” Today, of course, Vermeer’s crystalline cubes of light-filled space, masterful reflections, and enigmatic, contemplative women make him one of the most revered painters in art history. About Linda Blair: Linda Blair has taught art history for many years, at the La Jolla Athenaeum and UC San Diego Osher; she was a docent at The Cloisters. She holds a BA from Mills College and an MA from USD. She is an active volunteer at UC San Diego, dedicated to raising scholarship funds. Oolong Gallery is thrilled to announce its upcoming exhibition, "The Room of Orpheus," on view from Nov. 1 to Dec. 11, 2024. This is the second show in Oolong's new permanent Rancho Santa Fe gallery space featuring work by four Southern California based artists: Jasmine Little, Derek Simons, Stan Kaplan, Bianca Juarez, who collectively explore themes of mythology, memory, and material in the form of ceramic sculptures and paintings. Inspired by the Mediterranean origins and mythology of Orpheus and the poignant Orphic trilogy by Jean Cocteau, alongside Philip Glass’s powerful score, "The Room of Orpheus" invites viewers into a new contemporary art space set in the Spanish Colonial town of Rancho Santa Fe, California. In relation to artists, the myth of Orpheus serves as a powerful metaphor for the creative process. Just as Orpheus's music evokes deep emotions and connects with universal themes of love, loss, and longing, artists use their mediums to explore and express the complexities of the human experience.
