  • Join historian Jeremy A. Stern, Ph.D., for a gripping online talk about Operation Bernhard, the Nazi scheme to counterfeit British banknotes during World War II using Jewish prisoners at Sachsenhausen concentration camp. Forced to operate a makeshift forgery factory for the SS, the captive prisoners faced an impossible dilemma: produce convincing counterfeits and risk death upon completion, or stall and risk the Nazis abandoning and eliminating the operation entirely. Their astonishingly close copies of British currency, with only subtle errors, kept them alive for a time. But their ultimate fate hung on the decisions of the SS commander as the German war effort crumbled. The talk is presented by Jeremy A. Stern, Ph.D., an independent historian, writer, and history educator who has long been drawn to this story and who owns an original forged Bernhard note, a rare physical artifact from the Nazi camps. Date: Sunday, November 8, 2026 Time: 11 a.m. – 12 p.m. Location: Online via Zoom Cost: $18 early bird (by October 25) | $25 regular Yiddish Arts and Academics on Facebook / Instagram

  • Join us at VolunBEERS on Tuesday, July 14, our quarterly fundraiser and service project! This event is a way to engage the community in service through our unique approach involving a local nonprofit, HOSD, and a local brewery, winery or restaurant. Our July VolunBEERS is dedicated to Encanto Elementary, a local Title 1 school supporting 400 students annually. We'll be packing school supplies for their students to receive before school starts back up! In addition to our project, we will be hosting a back to school drive and are requesting new items such as writing materials, backpacks, pencil pouches, and anything else school-related. We're also excited to share that another silent auction will be taking place. Please note that individuals must be at VolunBEERS to place their bids. Space and supplies are limited, so we recommend buying your tickets early. Generous support from the San Diego community helps HandsOn San Diego support over 100 San Diego schools, parks and nonprofits. We would appreciate it if you would consider donating and joining us for VolunBEERS, where you have the opportunity to support our organization. Help give back to our local community through volunteer service while enjoying the best beer San Diego has to offer! Can't make this event but still want to make an impact? Consider making a $100 donation instead! HandsOn San Diego is funded primarily through donations and corporate sponsors and is fiscally sponsored by Mission Edge San Diego, a 501(c)(3) organization. Your donations help us continue our mission to strengthen communities through volunteer action. Because we believe that when individuals are actively engaged, communities are stronger.
