Learn to basketweave with Marsha Orr! The Lace Collar basket presents many traditional weaving techniques in a small project (5” x 8”) that can be accomplished in an afternoon. Weaving techniques include creating a solid woven base, twining, over-under interrupted weave, 3-Rod wale, and the final flourish, creating a beautiful braided rim. The basket can be woven in natural reed, stained, or dyed reed can be added for color. Additional colors of reed will be available in class for students to weave with. This December you will have the rare opportunity to witness a living Nativity Scene, one that sings with the voices of angels and shepherds! Musica Vitale invites you to a staged performance of Laud to the Nativity by Italian composer Ottorino Respighi on 12/13 (St. Paul's Cathedral) and 12/18 (Christ Church Coronado). Although Lauda per la Natività del Signore is generally presented as a concert piece, Respighi's wife Elsa left detailed instructions for a staged production. Our director, the noted singer-actress Angelina Réaux, might not follow these to the letter, but she is excited to bring this lesser-known work to life in the form of a popular Italian tradition, the presepe vivente or living nativity scene. Our distinguished soloists--Alberto Estanol, Shepherd (Opera Tijuana), Janelle de Stefano, Mary (Professor of Music, Santa Monica College) and Lisa Parente, Angel (San Diego Opera Singing Artist)--along with the chorus of Musica Vitale and a woodwind ensemble will breathe new life into the Christmas story, as told by the imaginative and innovative Ottorino Respighi. Throughout this comprehensive workshop, you’ll learn the step-by-step process of creating an ocarina from raw clay to a beautiful musical instrument. Under the guidance of our instructor, Israel Basurto, you’ll delve into the world of ceramics, exploring essential techniques, and shaping clay with your hands. From molding the body of the ocarina to intricately carving the finger holes and crafting the mouthpiece, you’ll acquire the skills to bring your musical vision to life. Embrace your creativity as you personalize your ocarina with a variety of decorative techniques, such as incising patterns, adding texture, and experimenting with underglazes (…all time permitting! Three 20th century masterpieces! After his emigration from Revolutionary Russia in 1918, Rachmaninoff, as one of the world’s most sought-after pianists, had little time for composing and completed only six pieces in a quarter of a century of exile. But that music is among his most beautiful and concentrated, and none more so than his elegiac final work, his Symphonic Dances, written when World War II was already underway, and the composer and his wife were living in New York City. Rachmaninoff, already sick with the lung cancer that was to kill him, spent time in a country retreat on Long Island, where the quiet and peacefulness inspired music combining intense nostalgia for an old world gone with the tremendous rhythmic energy and optimism that he so loved about America. Conductor Matthias Pintscher begins the concert with the beautiful glittering colors of Ravel’s Mother Goose, originally conceived as a charming piano duet for adults and children to play together, and then later transformed into an orchestral ballet. And Alexi Kenney makes his Symphony debut with his “soulful and stirring” (The Pittsburgh Post Gazette) interpretation of Bartók’s Violin Concerto No. 2, a work written in the composer’s very last years in Europe before, despairing of the triumph of fascism and violence on all sides, he and his second wife emigrated to the USA. Conceived on a symphonic scale, this music speaks of the darkness and tragedy of the time, but it is also saturated with Bartók’s lifelong love and deep knowledge of the folk-music of Eastern Europe from which he drew not only musical ideas but a deep and optimistic belief in the power of ordinary people to survive suffering and oppression. San Diego Canyonlands wants to make sure the trails are clear and that the native plants are safe from potential fire. Your work will also assure that the plants present in the canyon will continue to thrive and be resilient in the face of the ever-present danger of climate change. Volunteers will be removing invasive plants and providing trail maintenance.
