  • 4 Mondays from 6 – 8 p.m. April 29, May 6, 13, 27 In this 4-week series, students will learn the fun and meditative practice of kurinuki. We will explore the Japanese technique of carving yunomi cups. Working with mid fire clay, students will complete multiple projects and be able to utilize a wide array of glazes and colors throughout the course. All materials provided.   • Unity San Diego Spaghetti Dinner And Poker Tournament! Unity San Diego is hosting former KPBS "A Way with Words" co-host Dr. Richard Lederer to teach us how to play Texas Hold'em Poker. The event will start at 4:30 where Dr Lederer will personalize his books offered for sale. 5:00 brings a delicious spaghetti, garlic bread and salad buffet where you will also be able to bid to have Richard host a party for you. 6:00 brings a Texas Hold'em tutorial and the start of the tournament. Prizes for the top 3 winners!

  • Learn Plain Weave, Clasped Weft & Hemstitching on a Rigid Heddle Loom Select a date from the drop-down menu. Have you wanted to dive into the mindful, rhythmic, magic of weaving? In this rigid heddle loom workshop, students will learn to weave their own unique handwoven fabric in both plain weave (a classic, simple pattern) and clasped weft (where two wefts interconnect, creating unique patterns). Each student will learn the basics of how the loom works, a variety of simple weaving techniques, plain weave, clasped weft weaving, and finally, hemstitching for a finished piece. Students will weave a length of handwoven fabric of their choosing using the techniques in-class. Looms will be pre-warped in this class and students will weave together on Ashford Looms with 100% cotton fiber for a fiber-friendly afternoon. Beginners, as well as those with weaving experience are welcome. No experience necessary.   • Spreckels Organ Society, a non-profit organization curating concerts and performances at the Spreckels Organ Pavilion in the heart of Balboa Park, celebrates Halloween with a special Spooktacular concert featuring Phantom of the Opera and Haunted Organ Tour. Beginning at 5:30 p.m., The Haunted Pavilion opens to the public for a kid-friendly insider tour “Meet the Great Composers Decomposing,” joined by zombies from Thriller San Diego (first-come, first-served). At 6:30 p.m., the concert begins with Spooktacular organ solos, led by Spreckels Organ Artistic Director Raul Prieto Ramírez, who is also San Diego’s Civic Organist; followed by a “Phantom of the Opera” concert with Soprano Caroline Nelms and Tenor Bernardo Bermudez. The program – free and open to the public – includes state-of-the-art spooky projections on the Pavilion by SonderEyes to provide a unique Halloween visual experience that goes with the music.
