In this workshop, students will learn about the origins of Kintsugi, the Japanese ‘art of golden repair,’ and its meaning as it relates to one’s own life. Instructor Luis Santiago explains, “In these uncertain and crazy times, I believe people can find some solace and comfort in realizing that their so called “scars” and imperfections are things that do not need to be hidden or ashamed of.” While the traditional craft of Kintsugi can take multiple months to complete, mastery in application, and involves toxic lacquer, the techniques used in this workshop to repair two ceramic pieces and embellish these pieces in two distinct Kintsugi-inspired ways brings it to a much wider audience and allows for completion in one workshop. All materials are included. Students will learn two distinct ways of highlighting the breaks of their provided ceramic pieces and will take home a unique piece. In this workshop with side coach Aretha Sills open to players of all experience levels, we’ll explore Viola Spolin’s games and exercises that inspire theatrical improvisers to get out of the head and into the present time without any expectation of performing or being “on.” Our goal is to experience the many benefits of spontaneity and group play. Through a combination of meditative warm ups, sensory-awareness exercises, and delightful traditional children’s games, we’ll aim to have fun, release the intuition, and open up new avenues of personal expression. We will (briefly) touch on some of the contemporary brain science that helps us understand why Spolin’s work is so helpful in regulating our nervous systems, and find ways to take her playful methods into our everyday life when we find ourselves under pressure. New concert series pairs top sommeliers with the country’s greatest concertmasters for a unique “taste what you hear” experience. The first concert in the series pairs Philadelphia Orchestra Concertmaster David Kim with Sommelier Rafael Peterson. Mainly Mozart, home to the largest gathering of concertmasters and principal players in the United States through the highly acclaimed Mainly Mozart All-Star Orchestra, has announced a new chamber music series to launch in Fall 2024 at Fairbanks Ranch Country Club. Sponsored by Patricia & Christopher Weil, The Sommelier Series: The Concertmasters, includes three intimate concerts, Nov. 16, Jan 11, and Feb 8 featuring concertmasters from the Philadelphia Orchestra, Dallas Symphony and Los Angeles Philharmonic. Each concertmaster has been paired with leading sommeliers and wine curators who will choose each concert’s wine selections based on inspiration from the classical musical program. Chef Claudia Sandoval, “MasterChef” winner and judge, who is also the Culinary Director and Executive Producer for Mainly Mozart’s “Culinary Concerto” Gala, is coordinating the sommeliers and wineries for the new series. Each concert will begin with an hour-long wine and appetizer reception at 6pm followed by a discussion with the sommelier, hosted by Chef Sandoval, preceding an intermission-free concert at 7 p.m. Wine will be poured between musical selections, and sommeliers and musicians will illustrate the connection of the wine to the pieces being performed. The three-Saturday series opens November 16, in a concert featuring Philadelphia Orchestra Concertmaster David Kim, performing with his orchestral colleagues Burchard Chang, viola and Priscilla Lee, cello.
