Saturday, April 27 — 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. Join Jojo Wang and Riri Tamura, both San Diego-based lettering artists, for a workshop on lettering principles at Strenger Studio! This workshop is designed for individuals interested in learning the art of lettering. We will start the class by learning basic lettering principles and utilize Posca pens to learn 2 different lettering styles: sans serif and script. By the end of the workshop, you will have the chance to personalize your own journal cover, applying the techniques learned throughout the session. Three renowned visionary artists of the next generation combine talents in this eclectic new piano trio, Junction. Violinist Stefan Jackiw, recognized for musicianship that combines poetry and purity with an impeccable technique, returns with pianist Conrad Tao and cellist Jay Campbell. Tao, who appears worldwide as a pianist and composer, has been dubbed a musician of “probing intellect and open-hearted vision” by the New York Times. Approaching both old and new works with the same curiosity and emotional commitment, Campbell has been called “electrifying” by the New York Times. Join us for an immersive and hands-on ceramic workshop where you’ll uncover the ancient art of crafting your very own ocarina, a whimsical and enchanting musical instrument. Throughout this comprehensive workshop, you’ll learn the step-by-step process of creating an ocarina from raw clay to a beautiful musical instrument. Under the guidance of our instructor, Israel Basurto, you’ll delve into the world of ceramics, exploring essential techniques, and shaping clay with your hands. From molding the body of the ocarina to intricately carving the finger holes and crafting the mouthpiece, you’ll acquire the skills to bring your musical vision to life. Embrace your creativity as you personalize your ocarina with a variety of decorative techniques, such as incising patterns, adding texture, and experimenting with underglazes (…all time permitting! Some folks work faster than others). By the end of the workshop, you’ll have not only crafted a one-of-a-kind ocarina but also developed a deeper appreciation for the ancient craft of ceramics.
